Next week i will be buying a new HD and am debating if i should switch from xp sp3 and go vista instead ?

few questions tho ofc :)

1.wats game perfromance like in vista compared with xp ? (i know it was pretty poor)
2.are there any/many games that are known not to work with vista (compat list anywhere?)
3.will benchmarks be lower?
4.i did read that copying large files in vista was a problem ,is this still the case?
5.i do a lot of dvd/cd burning and converting video/audio files ,is this a prob in vista as i heard vista has protection for that kinda thing ?
6.if i do go vista itll be vista ultimate 32 bit as thats the disk i have ,so is my current 2gb ram good enuff for that ?

im keen to try out dx10 or even if i dont use it ,at least have the option if i want it.

obviously id like vista to run as close to xp performance wise if this is possible on my current system.altho if im going to lose say 10% or more performance in games then i probably wont bother.

any suggestions would be great.
sorry if these are n00b sound questions but tbh ive only really heard bad things about vista ,but ive noticed a lot of u guys use it so im assuming its not as bad as its made out to be..

thnx

The game performance sucks. Sp1 was supposed to fix file copy bugs , tho` Ive never noticed any anyway. There`s no real NEED to change if you like xp.

Id say go with Vista overall gaming performance is now on par with xp and yad get the added bonus of being able to run dx10. 2gig would be fine and ur rig would have no probs running it. At the very least give it a go if ur not entirely happy ya can go back to xp. All my games run fine on my system and the only prob i did encounter was itunes not werkin properly wich is now rectified.

XP SP3 sucks. There are many compatibility issues and most of them are still unknown.

I reinstalled my Windows because I kept getting Explorer Crashes, internet explorer crashes and notepad crashes. I reinstalled Windows SP2 and once I installed SP3, the same stuff started crashing again. Fresh install!

2.are there any/many games that are known not to work with vista?
DOOM 95 thanks to the nVidia driver.

3.will benchmarks be lower?
Possibly.

4.i did read that copying large files in vista was a problem ,is this still the case?
Nope, SP1 was meant to fix that, and it has for me.

5.i do a lot of dvd/cd burning and converting video/audio files ,is this a prob in vista as i heard vista has protection for that kinda thing ?
If you use 3rd party burners and converters, you'll be fine.;)

6.if i do go vista itll be vista ultimate 32 bit as thats the disk i have ,so is my current 2gb ram good enuff for that ?
2 GB is fine, unless you're doing UBER gaming. 2 GB works perfectly on my PC, and its only DDR2 533.

obviously id like vista to run as close to xp performance wise if this is possible on my current system.altho if im going to lose say 10% or more performance in games then i probably wont bother.

Three things:
vLite: www.vlite.net
vLite let me cut down Vista HP so that it would run on my laptop more responsively than XP Profesional (normal install), until I updated it. My laptop has a PIII @ 850 MHz and 512 MB of RAM. Its a good idea to check it out! (it is freeware)! (and it is completely legal to copy your disk, as you can still only use it for one installation)

MSCONFIG: type that into Run, and you can control various services and startup options.

CCleaner: it keeps your registry clean, deletes junk, controls startup programs, can uninstall anything, and is very cool (because it is free).

None of those questions are n00b questions: they usually result in a better understanding of whatever your are asking about, and can make the difference between doing/thinking something wrong and doing/thinking right!

Yup gaming is fine on vista even though I got a weak rig running it lol, but it's far more stable now for me, tweaked some unwanted services here and there and not a single crash or w/e. Updated to SP1 and still works like a charm.. So far not being able to familiarize on how some other things look like but I'm starting to get used to it. So far vista experience for me is wonderful.. Btw after installing vista better read the tweaking vista guide stickied here on the general s/w. :toast:

Only go with Vista if something you use requires Windows Vista. Otherwise, if you get Vista for any reason other than that, you are wasting your money and setting yourself up for a lot of problems. Vista brings nothing to the computer world that you need nor anything that XP can't do for gaming. DX 10 is the only thing that Vista has, but that was the first requirement for why you should get Vista.

Your games won't be faster and your benchmarks will be slower. There is a compatability list but if you use Windows XP, then they are all compatible.

Your production studio will not be hampered by using Windows XP.
