I got my Maximus Formula in and hooked it up made sure everything was hooked up properly. I powered it on and it looked good so far, but every time I turn it on about 30 seconds to a minute later the computer just shuts off. If Im in the BIOS it shuts down. If I load windows it shuts down. All the fans work right, although with the stock fan on the CPU its on the warm side.

Any ideas?

Try re-seating the cooler? Almost sounds like a cpu overheat issue.

I guess I could try that, although I made sure it was tight when I put it on. Also put some Arctic Silver 5 on it. Does AS5 "expire"?

I ask because its an old tube of it.

Are all the push-pins through and locked in correctly? I don't think the AS is bad or anything. Make sure the 24 pin connector is on correctly. Make sure you are using the 8 pin mobo connector and not the 4 pin.

Nah, it doesn't expire when it's still in the tube. So long as you keep the cap on it.

And it's not uncommon for one of those stupid push-pins to pop out when you're moving your stuff around or installing stuff.

AS5 will seperate after some time. I would assume you noticed, it would come out almost oily in appearance.

Got it to stay on, but now it still has the blue screen while loading vista. Both in safe mode and in loading last known configurations. I did set the BIOS to have a PNP OS, because I prefer to have the OS do that stuff.

I appreciate any suggestions. I only hope I can get this fixed quick, or else Il have to put back the other one, since the comp NEEDS to be working tomorrow one way or another.

Reset the BIOS to completely stock. Don't change anything, and see if it will install.

Same thing. It will halt and blue screen right when its doing the first loading bar from left to right. It stops right in the middle and reboots.

How about trying to set your ram manually in the bios?

ShogoXT

Tried that too.

I tried to set it to 1.8v, DDR2 533, and I THINK I set the timings to 5 5 5 15.

Yes as Peet says and i have tried it you should get new stuff. with AS5 you should of had it in the fridge too but AC still says it will seperate.

Any chance you can get in the bios long enough to check the temps ?.

It WAS 80, but that is no longer an issue. It was the heatsink platic clips bending the wrong way and not going in the holes.

Now the issue was how do I install new SATA drivers when I cant get into windows. No longer an issue also because after a whole night of working on it, i just put back in the old mobo. Il try again later :(.

HDD corruption? I wonder if the mbr on the HDD got messed up...

no, once old mobo was back in, no more complaints

I had the mobo working with two different HDD's with two different copies of windows on each. Have you tried it with one stick of memory. Perhaps it's being picky about your ram? An update to the latest bios may help. Right now I'm a bit confused..

*Do you have the LCD poster plugged in? Is it giving you any messages?

maybe he should try a fresh install as seen as he trying a old install with a different mobo.

If you can get into the BIOS, make sure that it's set to look for SATA drives.

Why are you trying to install new SATA drivers on an old XP install?

Oh! Didn't know that! Yeah, deffinitely a fresh install is needed.

Its vista and fresh install isnt an option atm. Need the data.

Well, since you have it up and running on the old board, get to backing up your data. You really should back up regularly anyway. And it's always a good idea to back up before a major hardware change as well.

:( I tried installing the raid drivers for them, but it wont install unless it detects it. So basicly it wants me to install it where I cant get without it. Is there anything I can do to put the drivers on so it will load properly with the new mobo?

Not really. At least not as far as I know. Your best bet is to just back up your data and do a clean install.

Do you have a RAID array?

I really want to avoid a clean install just this once. Have too much customized stuff on here. Calling ASUS to see what they think, but so far im thinking my only way out is to get a PCI SATA controller, install it, put the HD on it to boot, then move it over to the other comp, then hopefully it will still boot long enough I can install the mobo drivers.

Currently its not letting me install the drivers without it already being connected.

WAITAMINUTE! I had forgotten how to "add hardware" like the good ol days of Serial ports and ISA. I think im on to something now... Locate the INF, hmm yes of course...

urm could install on the same drive or your other drive then back your stuff up try a fresh install after that maybe but the original problem did seem like your heatsink not sat flush then clean install after you got gremlins out of it :D

If you don't have a RAID array, take your drives out of SATA mode on the Maximus, and put them in IDE mode. That might let you boot to Windows and install your current chipset and SATA drivers. If not, there really isn't much of a performance difference in running in IDE mode.

Installing a fresh copy of Windows, updating and tweaking it is all a part of the fun man! I would follow Wile E's advice and back everything up now, then go for it. Even if you get it to work without a fresh install, most likely Windows will not be very stable.

I lost my vista disk. :( So I really cant.

Which one is the real SATA driver? The Jmicron or the Ich9r?

kenkickr
06-28-2008, 02:14 PM
Both of those are RAID controllers, the ICH9R is much better if you do go RAID. Once you find your vista disk try using vlite to add the RAID drivers to your disk. Anyways, set both of the RAID controllers to IDE.

ShogoXT

Already set to IDE. Found the disk, but the main reason I didnt want to reinstall everything was because I finally got it all running the way I wanted. If I redo it now, I wont remember all that crap I did to it to get it running nice!!!

Ugh... Backing it up now... 150GB worth of games in program files. 50gb of it is Steam, GL downloading all that overnight! (il try to copy it over to the other drive too)

Worst of all WHERE DO CURRENT GEN GAMES KEEP THEIR SAVES!?!?!?

Usually in Documents and Settings.
