This might sound dumb BUT I had a friend ask me a question i really can't answer
He currently has the EVGA 780i using a couple of 8800GT's in SLI. He would like to get a new ATI 4870 which i said should work no ploblem, I also told him the board does NOT support Crossfire. So then he ask me what if he gets a ATi 4870X2(R700) ??? will that work on a 780i ????? I don't now what to tell him

yes it will work.. as the x2 card has internal crossfire so to speak.. it is crossfired, but the crossfire is processed by the onboard plx chip and not the motherboard's chipset, and the card functions as a single video card to the motherboard, and therefore your friend can do it.

It should work fine, the 4870x2 has an internal crossfire bridge mean it is controlled by the card and not by the motherboard.

Well you learn something new everyday (lol) I thought it would work but only as a single GPU. He has always been a ATI Fanboy, He's going to love this news :) Thanks Guys

Didn't Ati say they are throwing out the internal crossfire and going directly through memory or something like that, I remeber reading it somewhere is thats what limited the 3870x2 in crossfire the last time and that its completely new architecture
