PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING
This is multiple choice. Select all prices that you think are still competitive. *1
OK, so the GTX 280 is approximately 0%-35% faster than the 4870 depending on the application/benchmark. AND, it consumes the same power or less. (Therefore performance/watt is also better). *2
What do you think the "right price is" for the GTX 280 to complete with the $300 4870? If you are thinking about a 4870, what price does the GTX 280 have to be in order for you to switch to nVidia.
The logic is as follows:
The same price or less, or
Less than 25% higher price (less than $375) because 4870 meets my needs. A better spec'ed card has to give a better performance/price ratio because I am already at the top of my budget.
25%-50% higher price ($375-$450) is OK to reflect $ for $ increase in performance and better performance/watt.
50%+ ($450+) because for the top dog you need to pay top dollar. This is the Intel formula. Prices increase exponentially with performance. PLUS CUDA is interesting for me, definately Value Added to me, Joe Consumer.
Please select your price point based on the assumption that the 4870 alternative will cost you $300.
This is multiple choice. Select all prices that you think are still competitive.
* Note 1: Select all prices that you would buy at. If you think $400 is the maximum price point, then select all options up to $400.
Note 2: These statements are subjective summaries of benchmarks posted in the last few days.

Going by this

It should cost 113% of the 3870 about $350.
I voted 375. Why multiple choice?

Thing is it won't be the top dog for much longer. Every indication seems to point at the 4870x2 claiming the performance crown at less than $600. Really, that is what the gtx 280 is going to have to compete against, and is now b/c many are waiting for it. As such it needs to be cheaper than the x2, which is supposed to come in from $500-550 USD. So $450 max. Right now maybe they could get away w/ $500 b/c it is the top dog. Really less though if they're wanting to fight back and not just do what's necessary to not seem like they failed. I don't see it happening though, it costs too much to produce. Me personally though, don't think I would pay over $300 for it unless there was a slew of games out that required only it's performance, a case even more unlikely than the first.

Its easier to fill in. You just keep ticking down the list until you get uncomfortable paying that much for the thing.

I'm done being generous...this is a poll :rockout:
400 bucks, no more & it could be less. That price is still underminding the relative performance of the thing when fully compared to the 4870 so I let NV have a little extra. Damn this thing is a flop

lol...I may have just skewed the poll..
I might pay 450 for it, it should cost less than the 9800GX2 and they should discontinue that (faster).

It should cost 113% of the 3870 about $350.
That's what I based my vote off of as well.
So why wasn't there a "Free" option?

ATI must to make a FTW blaster, that makes Nvidia to shame about, and then Nvidia will lower it's prices an everyone will be happy :)

Benchmarks show that at Standard resolutions (17"-24" resolutions), the 4870 is within ~5-15% of the GTX 280. But with high-res, like 27" and 30" displays, the GTX 280 pulls ahead a bit further. But it will still be pwned by 4870x2. However, 4870x2 DRINKS compared to GTX280

I found these tests to be interesting:
http://img.techpowerup.org/080703/Capture144.jpghttp://img.techpowerup.org/080703/Capture145.jpg
There seem to be a few areas where GTX 280 could pull ahead by a long margin. Is this the "bad drivers" issue plaguing nVidia GTX series? Or just horsepower that isnt used by typical game engines?

I would say $425 would be a good price looking at the $499 price tag the R700 would come with. NVIDIA really can't afford to sell it even at this price.
An interesting trivia Google gave me today is that at launch, Sony sold its PS3 at a price lower than cost-of-production, some strategic decision. Fail, because after it became popular, Sony couldn't step up the price and sell it at profit since that would kill its market. A period existed before Sony could cut mfg costs where they were negotiating with their parts suppliers...when Sony incured the most loss.
Unfortunately, TSMC sells NVIDIA a G200 at ~$120 thanks to horrible yields. Will NVIDIA do a "PS3" after R700 launch? We have to wait and see.

nvidia needs to find a better supplier. If TSMC is giving them yields well below industry norms, they need to get a huge discount from TSMC or only pay for "working" dies. Maybe time for nVidia to JV with IBM.

being the 4870x2 isn't out, I said 500$, because they could easily sell a ton of them at that price. the gtx260 would need to drop as well, probably to the 325$ mark or so. If I had 500$ to spend on a gpu and the gtx280 was at that pricepoint and the 4870x2 wasnt out, I could see myself buying one. Why? the 4870 can't best it, 2 4850's is out of the question, my mb only has 1 pcix slot.
after the 4870x2 launches who knows.
so yeah for now nv can get away with a price premium for the gtx280, just not as high as it currently is.

HD 4870X2 is that. Look at the HD 4870 scores and ad 60-80% to that.

They should call the 4870x2 the Bloody Monster :D Man, I loved that card. The GTX280 is just trembling right now. As it is, it costs way too much plus when the x2 comes out, they'll have to drop it so low that it'll basically be like the 9800GTX - a bitch-slap in the face. NV has to be prepared for this in one way or another :(

^^ That the problem with polls. Some people dont read the instructions. Some people do but cant understand them. Others just play with ya. But hopefully the overall statistics are representative.
Seems like $400-$425 is the price point for TPU members.

Yes, even so after the news in that we're just 6~7 months away from the next generation (as in DX 10.1 compliant) GPUs from NV.

I said $475 just because thats a 30% price cut and nvidia fan-bags will flock to the 280 at that price.

hmm seems nvidia agreed with me, now will it sell?
