View Full Version : Win98 PC
So yeah, Ißm trying to setup a "new" Win98 PC. Even had to order a P4 (Socket 478) trough eBay, wich suprisingly came delivered without any issues. Now to my problem...
I built the parts together, put in the Win98 Setup Disc (yes, I still legally owne one) and want to start setup. But it wonßt work.
First, i got to the usual blue setup-dialogue-thing, as it somewhen told me to reboot my PC, wich i did. But booting up again, after the device listing, it tells me to "press a key to reboot". So I´m in a kinda circle here.
Second, I swiched HDs, and NOW it tells me, that I have to create a DOS-partition on the HD. Followed by a DOS-Command-field. Now, how the heck do I do this? I can´t even reach the option window for formatting, nor do I know how to do that via DOS commands...
Does ANYBODY here have an idea what I can do:(
PS: All the parts are from PCs wich ran Win98 and everything is in good condition.
Thanks a lot for any advice:)

My sister's computer has Windows 98 SE on it....it's a bit different installing that compared to WindowsXP. You have to format the HDD using fdisk. Old school :p Here's the link on how to install it, if you have any more questions ask me :)

Soo baiscally, I hook the HD up my current PC, format that thing and hook it back up to the Win98 PC, correct?
And another Question... I do need the 98 cdrom only do I? I never really installed anything else besides XP and Win2k xD
But thanks so far, I will give it a try. After nap. The Pizza took to much resources to eat :P

Yeah, you just need your Windows 98 CD-ROM and of course drivers after it's installed.
Read the article, it can explain it better than I really can. It's been so long since I had to install Windows 98 heh.
Don't mean to offend if I do, but is English your second language?? They have a translation option on the webpage if that makes it easier for you :)

You know S478 boards are years newer than the average Win98 machine right? ie half the tech in it isn't even supported by Win98. For example Win98 + USB2.0 = no, over 512MB of RAM crashes Win98 as well. HT if you have that on the CPU isn't supported.
Why exactly are you making a Win98 machine? I see no use for one...

Interesting Dan...my sister's computer has a GB of RAM, with an Sempron 2400+ (I think can't remember off hand) and it supports USB 2.0 (I had to search for drivers) and she's running Windows 98 SE just fine. I don't know if it's different with 98. She used to have Windows ME...but she lost the CDs (don't ask) and my mom had an old copy of Windows 98 SE from our old computer and we installed that.

Heh, see where I live, then you know my mother tongue :P What was the mistake that revealed my terrible secret? Also, I refuse to use a translation option. Or is it so bad?^^
Also, I´m building a Win98 machine simply to play old games. Like, Redline Racer, SCARS, wich I havent played in years, couldnt get them to work on XP (an 2k) and I want to play them badly xD Besides, no USB onboard, it even has a I/O card. 256mb RAM.
Also, as I said, the parts of the PC all come from PCs wich used 98.

Have you tried using the "compatibilty" option in Windows XP? Not sure if it will help, but if you can install your old games on XP without an issue, right click the shortcut for the .exe (probably on your desktop) and click properties. Proceed to the compatibilty tab and set it to run in Windows 98 mode. This might solve your issue.
I had an old version of Final Fantasy 7 which didnt play nice with XP, used the above option, and it worked fine.
Thing is, compability mode does not help. I tried that, no success. Not even in Win2k.

Just run VMWare or Virtual PC. The 3D capabilities in VMware are sufficient to run such games with ease.
Hmm I had VMWare installed once, wonder why I didn´t use it... I´ll try.

hehe it's not that bad...I speak a few different languages so I understand well enough :)
those aren't DOS games are they? Try using DOSBox if they are, I use it for older games like Elder Scrolls Arena etc. etc.
Damn that means I have to get better in English. Tho I have to speak it as much as swiss german at my current job... eh well, thanks for the hint^^
No, no DOS games, and DOSBox is complicated :P
