View Full Version : Static 100% bad?

Hey, I stupidly touched my graphics card and had 2 shocks of static electricity hit it on the s-video part. I started it up and it ran fine (although I never saw it boot into Windows because my processor died for a different reason). So I've got about a week until my new processor and motherboard comes in and the card is just going to be sitting there. So will static do damage to a card 100% of the time? If so hopefully it just hurt the circuits connecting to the S-video out because I'm never gonna use the S-video anyway. Thanks guys.

Just sitting around your card will be fine. Just keep it someplace safe preferably on the mo bo. If it must be out of your case then keep in an environment that won’t promote static. A normal plastic bag is not a good idea for that reason. I have kept components including video cards setting out for long periods of time with no ill effects. Just be sure not to bump or drop it :banghead: . As a rule wood and paper a pretty safe mediums.

BTW how did you kill your CPU?

I mean I shocked it already, but it doesn't seem to be hurt. That's what I meant, but thanks for the precaution. It was in the mobo when I shocked it.

I was an idiot with the processor, I tightened the heatsink to the processor too tight so there was almost no thermal paste in between the heatsink and processor. I was lazy so I just thought I'd check it later. Well, later was when it stopped starting up and got artifacts everywhere. I- am an idiot. But I'm getting an Opteron 144 and a new motherboard so it's cool. Although if the processor was still working I could sell it on ebay for as much as I bought it for, around $180.

Static electricity is a pretty bitch. You can damage your component just by one touch, but you will never know what happend. If you damage your card in this way, it can work for 1, 2 days or a month, but then dies. Static shock does not totaly destroy el. circuits just damages them. So then it is just matter of time.
Static el. destroys a lot of hardware, because you can't see that you damaged it and your component doesn't die immediately. So be always aware!

did you just shock the s-video connector? or a part of the s-video that you wouldnt see ie right behind the link were it connects too the card?

i think it will be fine if it didnt jump the pcb itself i dont think you did anything.

Actually, if he shocked the connector, he most likely hit the metal ground, which would probably leave the card unharmed. I had shocked my AN7 at the side of the pcb and it was a nice large jolt, but it still hasnt had any issues today.

If it still works *now*, then its unlikely to have any issues..

I hit right behind the whole bus part, right where the green on the card starts. The VGA connector is all I use, so I didn't hit anywhere near the core or RAM or capacitors, and I hit near the mounting point (bracket) so there's S-video and DVI closer than the VGA connector. Like I said, it ran fine before and I didn't hit any (as far as I know) vital components. Thanks guys

is bad. why kill one board if we can kill six :) *waits for announcer to say MONSTER KILL*

and no, the anti-static bag in the position like it is shown will not protect your stuff :D

I was just going to point that out :p

Geez.. id love to have that many mobos laying around.. esp that little white one :twitch:

Dont forget, you can add what looks like a prescott to that death toll if you zap it.. looks like you left one in the abit mobo :P

I'll take the Abit AA8 Fatal1ty off your hands  . Wish I could have a whole bunch of mobos sitting in a box. Do you get to keep all the hardware you test or something W1zzard.
You must have a pretty nice rig if you do.

Wearing socks and shuffling your feat over your carpet when your working on your computer =

OneCool, you got an Opteron 146 and I'm wondering if a 146 is more capable than a 144. Looks like on average, 144's hit about 2.9ghz, and your 146 has 3ghz with an air-cooled heatsink. Thanks dude

What stepping and week is that 144 opty?

Really does make all the difference.

Alright, cool. I don't have it yet so I wouldn't know, but what's a good number (and letters) to look for? Thanks

THANK YOU MAN! That's awesome. I'm reading all of it right now. The only thing I don't get is, are Opteron's multiplier's unlocked? I assume so (if people hit 3ghz, the fsb/RAM would be huge). If they are unlocked, and the model (144, 146, etc) relies solely on the multiplier, then the ONLY factor I can think that would mess with overclocking is the stepping and week. That's awesome, but also sucks because I have no idea how I can ask for a good stepping number, but it's okay. Thanks again man. By the way, what's your numbers? (example- 200mhzx15multiplier)

OneCool
11-30-2005, 09:33 PM
Im running 300fsb & 10 multiplier = 3000mhz

The multis are locked on the opty

my stepping CABYE 0540 (the last 4 numbers are the year and week it was made)

Okay well wouldn't that make the RAM an unbelievable 600mhz speed? I mean you're talking DDR400, that 200mhz increase is 50%.

OneCool
11-30-2005, 11:05 PM
Yes,but thats just the way im running it.You dont have to run it that fast.

Just use your memory divider set it to 166 instead of 200.

Then your still running 3ghz on the CPU but your ram is only running about 235-240 ;)

You can set it to 133 and get the ram down even lower if you need to...

Heres a small note to remember when running any A64 setup.Get the highest possible CPU speed you can stable after that you can tweak memory, htt, etc

Okay awesome. My last mobo froze the computer every time I changed memory ratios, but hopefully the new one will work it. 480mhz is still a massive increase over stock so that's awesome. Thanks dude

There's also of course DDR600 memory. ;) When you have the divider set for DDR400, you can set the clock speed on those to 300 MHz, guaranteed (well, almost guaranteed). They cost about $180-$250 for the 1 GB dual-channel kits, though.

I have a Neo2 plat myself (its what I upgraded from)and its a great mobo.

What bios are you running on it?

AMDCam
12-01-2005, 03:35 AM
I should be running the newest BIOS when I get it, I mean I was on the website when it updated itself. Hopefully I'll get the newest one, but it's alright if I have to update, which I will. ALSO, WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW DDR600?!?! I heard of like DDR2-600, but I thought DDR400 was the highest possible. I have some XMS Pro DDR400 which I really don't wanna get rid of, but maybe I will for a huge clock increase like that.

Yes, I've seen it on Newegg. They have ones by 3 companies, which are OCZ, Patriot, and G-Skill; but they don't seem to have the G-Skill 1 GB kit anymore at the moment.
