Newb here- would love input on improving system gaming performance. Just switched to ATI 9600aiw 128mb from bfg Nvidia 5600 256mb to remove triangles when using smoke grenades in COD2. Using atitools, it appears I can only overclock & not boost memory on aiw.
Not in the market yet for additional cooling so whats a safe oc level that gives great performance boost?
Also, it appears atitools now supports Nvidia. Would I come out better using my bfg card?
Last Q: My cpu is slightly overcloked to 2010 mhz from base 2000mhz. Would systools be the simpliest app to boost my sstem performance without adding central air?
Any helpful replies will be greatly appreciated.:)
thanx,

I prefer Coke. ;) Although your post and the title has nothing to do with each other! Someone changed it?

For starters, the name of this thread has zero relevance to what is in the thread IMO. But I must say I love Coca Cola.
There is no way to tell you what a “safe” overclock is. What ever your max overclock is, what you get. More cooling will help though. For what video card is better, I really couldn’t say safely. The only way is to put them in and run a few benchmarks on them and see which does better.
That 10 extra MHz on your CPU will make no difference what so ever. Most CPU cores frequency will vary that much by them selves. The best way to overclock is through your bios, systool is good for experimenting. But it will be lost after you restart your system.

Sorry to keep the thread off topifc (in a strict sense)
I don't drink soft drinks, nor do I drink alkoholic beverages. Water, Ice tea, juice or flavored minerwater for me.
Well good question about your graphic cards...the bfg has 256MB of memory, while the 9600 only has 128MB. check what speed the memory chips (usually the writing on the chips will tell you, if you are not sure what the writings mean, write them in here and we can help you) on the cards are rated for. Most of the time, the memory will run at that speed with no problems, and sometimes above that. Better cooling on the memory (heatsinks and such) will not yield much better results to make the purchase of the extra cooling worth while IMHO.
Another thing to note, is that graphic cards with more memory tend to use slower mem chips to save cost (basically making the large amount of memory the foremost selling point, not the speed) so your ATI may have faster mem chips than the bfg.
just take small steps, around 5 Mhz at a time to OC your graphic card..until you see artifacts after playing or benchmarking, then back down around 5 (or to be save 10mhz) and you should be fine. But I am not responsible for busted parts! :) just thought I mention that as well.

The 9600 should do about 400 MHz on the core, the memory probably wont overclock at all as you said because they use crap quality ram on 9600 these days :shadedshu
Go here and scroll down to the revised quick start guide-
http://www.techpowerup.com/wiki/doku.php/atitool/quick_start_guide
And from now on, use titles that summarize your question :)
Im a pepsi man myself :toast:

Now you make us all look very unhealthy... :o
And my 9550 got to 455MHz core so 400MHz would IMO be a safe clockspeed for your core. Since the core was designed to work at 400MHz anyway. And I did mine with only a heatsink. Still you should make sure by only overclocking a little at a time and using a benchmark or ATI Tool to check for artifacts.

the 9550 are usualy cheap cards with left over 9600 cores, i wouldnt push them alot,
but, then again, gexcube did make some good 9550 cards, so, make sure its good before pushing it,
as for thr 2010mhz, well, some motherboards dont have the clocks directly at 200mhz for FSB, some have 201, some have 199, depends on the bios and clock generator,

Thanx for all replies. Most were very helpful. Sorry about the teaser to get it read:D
Here this may help in dicidng which card to use.

Pepsi & Ati :)
Add some ramsinks to your memory modules to help Atitool OC your memory a little.
(Off topic: here's hoping the R580 will be a worthy sucessor to the R300 and put Ati back on track)

Pepsi and ATI :rockout: Can't really say which processor i prefer, since i've never really tried out an amd properly... I fried 1 when i was 10 tho  I found out how to get into the bios, and thought the fsb was the actual speed of the processor, and typed in '2500'
