Hello everyone,

I am new into these things and I really need your help. I wanted to ask the following:

I have this system:

CHAINTECH ZENITH / 7NJS ULTRA / AMD SOCKET A /
NVIDIA nFORCE 2 ULTRA 400+ MCP-T / ATX motherboard

Originally on:

AMD ATHLON XP, 1,25 GHz, 1.024 GB of RAM (2x512) which runs on Windows Xp Professional with windows service pack version 2

In the bios, my advanced chipset setup features originally was set as follows:

FSB Freq: 100mhz
Memory timings:
T(RAS) – 5
T(RCD) – 3
T(RP) -- 3
Cas latensy – 2.5
AGP aperture size 64mb
AGP freq – auto (66mhz)
And the CPU TEMP was 53 o C

Now, I overclocked it to

1,88Ghz 2000+
FSB Freq: 150mhz
Memory timings:
T(RAS) – 5
T(RCD) – 2
T(RP) -- 2
Cas latensy – 2.5
AGP aperture size 256mb (was 64 and changed it to 256, as people suggested)
AGP freq – 70mhz
And the CPU TEMP is now varying from 57 - 61 o C
And system temp runs at 44 o C

System performance has increased dramatically and I can now take more advantage of my newly-purchased SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON X800GT, AGP, 256 RAM video card. I didn’t have any problems ‘till now but I’ve only been running it for a couple of hours. Are these settings (and temperature) ok or will I get a useless, burned cpu and motherboard in no time?!?

Thanks a lot for your help.

What kind of cooling are you using? Also I'd put the AGP aperture size to 256bit. Looks pretty good, XPs run really hot so it could be fine. If you are using stock and/or basic cooling, I'd get a nice aftermarket cooler.

Yeah, a basic fan is what i use, the one that came with the pc when i bought it. Excuse my ignorance but by "I'd get a nice aftermarket cooler." you mean a better fan?

Thanks!

yeah, i'd definantly increase the AGP aperture to 256mb.
and by aftermarket cooler what he means is a better heatsink and fan for your CPU.
and maybe some more case fans to exhaust the heat from your system and to blow in cooler air from outside the system.

Thanks, i increased it to 256 mb, runs very good. What's an average amount where a temperature for such a cpu, would be considered dangerous?

I don't have a huge knowledge of XPs, but I wouldn't let it get very close to 70ºC. As far as an aftermarket heatsink I would stick with Thermalright if you have the money for something like that. It really all depends on how much noise matters to you. I would deffenitely recomend getting a shim (http://www.xoxide.com/coppershim.html) to protect your core from getting crushed.

Checked at the thermalright website and my motherboard is not compatible with this. Anyway, thanks a lot i'll check all these things out.

Cheers!
