hi,
I was planning to overclock my gfx card but it has confused me no end; i have the leadtek winfast 7800gt which comes with its own hardware monitoring \ overclocking software made by winfox.
The first thing that confused me was that there is a 2D speed and a 3D speed for both the memory and the GPU - The 2D GPU speed is roughly half of the 3D speed - i figured that this must have ment that 2D applications dont need as much power and so lowers the frequancys for power consumption or something.
I started overclocking using coolbits as this can configure the optimum frequencys automatically. I did this and managed to go from 400Mhz \ 1000Mhz in 3d mode to 470Mhz \ 1140Mhz, i didnt overclock the 2d mode as coolbits wouldnt alow the auto overclcok feature only manual.
I then loaded a game and used the hardware monitor to check if these frequencys were actually working as A- i saw no performance gain and b- i had no sign of defects at such a good overclock; when i checked the graph of clock speeds i found that it was running in 2D mode at 505Mhz \ 1140Mhz. The hardware monitor stated that it had a minimum clock of 275 and a maximun clock of 505Mhz.
The frequencys in the hardware monitor were still 275Mhz \ 1140Mhz in 2D and 470Mhz \ 1140Mhz in 3D; i then decided to raise the 2D clock in the overclocking tool (winfast) to 470Mhz as after all the hardware monitoring utility had stated that it was running at 505Mhz and i saw defects and was forced to reboot.
Is there two gpu's in the 7800 (2d & 3d)?
can anybody help decribe whats going on as i am more intreged than anything else.
...and how stupid am i being out of 10?
cheers
