I made the exact same transition, I have to say I don't notice really anything in day-to-day stuff, games run quite a bit better but that's because I upgraded my video card (went from AGP to PCI-E so I pretty much had to)
It will benchmark a lot better though, 939 AMDs are currently the best way to get 3dmarks and also have excellent RAM bandwidth.

thanks- i figured that i would obviously get some more processing power etc.. was going to shift to the PCI -E platform too- but i want to stick with AMD because am super happy with them- also considered 4000+ processors if i had money... prob. dont need it but im starting to call upon my CPU in more ways than before with tv / vid. capt cards and games and othe media app's...figured why not....

yeah I don't know if I would bother with the 4000+, at first the extra cache seems nice but for gaming purposes I swapped my 3000+ (1.8GHz 512k) for a 4400+ (dual 2.2GHz 1M) and really no noticeable boost in my doom 3. Of course it isn't taking advantage of the dual core, but looking back I think I would have been just as happy with the 3000+, it does everything I want about as well for less money and less heat also.
