I heard that the GTO2 uses a R430 BIOS (16 pipes) but still have the R480 core. I found different GTO2's at newegg, could it be the ones that actually have the R430 core?

The difference between these cards is the PCB color, probably the blue one might have the r430 core and it dosent have VIVO.
Go for the GTO2. The red PCB GTO2 are known to have R480 cores. Some say that they are already unlocked and have the R480 core but I believe its a 50/50 if it will be pre-unlocked or not.
I would pawn on the RED one (it has external power connector and 8 mosfets on the back the blue one hasn't external power connector;) ). Probably the red one has also R480 :D .
If somebody buy it please let us know if the above is true.

All red gto2 cards have r480 and are unlockable to 16 pipes or even sold with 16 pipes activated.
All blue gto2 cards have r430 and are unlockable to 16 pipes, most of them sold with 16 pipes already.

I've had both the blue pcb is an R430 core that the bios has been modded to make it look like an R480 and it does'nt have the extra power connector or overclock very well!
The red pcb that i am running at the mo is a different story alltogether definitley an R480 because i removed the heatsink to fit an arctic cooler 5 rev 2 and it has the extra pci express connector on for more juice. I am running mine at 560Mhz core 600Mhz (1200) Mem.:) Goes well, really well.
