how big a difference is the question.. ???

my laptop plays fear oh so slow.. but then again it plays it quite quick at lower settings..

I believe Tomshardware.com have some reviews on CPU's and Video cards you can check out to see where you stand from old to new CPU.....

You need more than just a decent processor to get F.E.A.R Going at max settings. You need a better than average video card and a whole lot of RAM. In fact to run any high end game well you need to balance out processor, memory, and video card. If any one of those three are lacking you want get the best of performance. Looks like from your specs, though your CPU is probably what is holding you back.

Make sure you have a socket 775 motherboard though and not a 478 one.

i think games like fear are so grfx card limitted that the cpu dosnt play much of a part..

go low enough and it does.. how low u can go i dont know.. i would have thought the 2.8 celeron with an x850xt would have managed it thow..

i know if i run my cpu at 2.2 gig or 2.9 gig my frame rates in fear stay pretty much the same..

sooo the obvious question.. what settings are u playing fear at.. cos they play a bigger part than anything else..

trog

ps.. i know one thing.. any cheapo 64 sempron with cheapo pc 3200 memory and an X1900xt grfx card will play fear okay.. but an FX60 with expensive fast memory and a x1300 wont.. he he

I can tell you that when I play any new games my system is very good. FEAR is the only game thus far that has minor lag spots here and there. My RAM is def. bottlenecking FEAR a little bit (I have settings on default). I think I heard FEAR can take up to a gig of RAM or something close to that to run w/ everything on. DAMN THATS A LOT lol. But if you have everything on low w/ a gig of RAM you should be good w/ a celeron. Try it if you didnt instead of dropping money on a CPU.

In F.E.A.R i get like 25-38 FPS in hl2 i get 45-60 FPS on hi settings...

I think you'd better post the rest of your specs...an FX55 with an X1900 is easily bottlenecked by 256MB DDR200.

fear needs more than 1 gig of system memory to run the highest quality textures.. i would say 2 gigs but all i know is i couldnt run it on 1 gig.. the system has to resort to swop filing every few seconds..

my laptop with 1 gig of memory go-6600 ultra and pentium M at 1.73 gig will play medium setting at something like 800x600 resolution..

another machine i have with 512 memory will run the lowest quality textures at the same resolution..

all these machines will run it but at dfferent resolutions and quality settings..

so i run it at high settings is meaningless.. high setting at what resolution is needed.. to make any sense of things..

if u wanna run fear at high settings and at 1600 x something no cpu in the world is gonna help u.. so what u are really saying is u cant run fear fast enough and pretty enough isnt it..????

at that rate neither can i or most folks.. i can manage 1024 x768 with high quality textures.. but i have to tweak other things down to get an average of 45-sh and lows above 25.. soft shadows is a big frame rate hitter is that turned off..???

so what resolution are u tryng to play it in.. are u running AA.. ??

did you try scanning for spyware/viruses? THOSE lag systems up! and otherwise yeah, check CPU socket and then upgrade that processor!

just ran a little fear test.. the in game tester thing..

cpu at 2.2 gig.. memory at 320.. game setting high and high..

minimum = 38..

average = 74..

highest = 157..

cpu at 2.9 gig.. memory at 420.. game setting high and high..

minimum = 44..

avergae = 81..

highest = 189..

###

okay there is a difference but not enough to make unplayable into playable.. something akin to a 60mhz speed increase on the grfx card would do a similar thing.. and there is one hell of difference between those two cpu/memory speeds..

my machine is software clocked so i can play this kinda game easily..

where fear is concerned its pretty much all down to the grfx card..

trog

ps.. well yes.. u try and run setting i cant manage.. lower your resolution down to "whatever".. buying a faster cpu wont alter things.. faster grfx card praps.. fps is god.. so is grfx card.. he he he

oh OCCASIONAL lag? that just means that there are too many things you're computer is trying to do at once (like a gazillion AI's). I think that your CPU isnt the only bottleneck...your FSB is preventing data from moving fast enough. Though, FSB bottleneck on an intel system can usually be solved by processor upgrade (from Celeron with 533mhz FSB to P4 800mhz FSB). And if that doesnt fix it, then its time you learn about a little bios option I like to call "FSB speed"... :roll:
