i find this really cool but i dont understand why we can do it. considering ati doesnt like overclocking. makes overclocking very fun.

I'm assuming of the new design technology they have emplemented into the PCB that would allow you to adjust the Voltages for the CORE and the MEMORY on these new R520/R580 cards. So not only you'll noticed people frying their CPU/RAM with over voltage issues, but now you'll see alot of people killing their new video cards since it's just as easy as CPU/RAM software wise now...hehehehe

Aren't the voltages dynamic as the clocks are with the XT's? That would be my guess as to why it's able to be software controled now.

I wouldn't say ATI doesn't like overclocking...awhile back ATI hosted an event where they invited some of the world's best overclockers to overclock their video cards. LN2, massive phase change etc.

indeed. :) and still host similar events.

well i ment from a manufacter stand point.

you dont see ati bfg's and evga's . u just see reference clock speeds.

quote on quote

"This represents a major milestone in ATI's history, which until now has been very strict concerning overclocking. Not only was ATI against users overclocking boards but ATI refused to support similar activities by its board partners. "

sapphire is the bfg of ati they release the overclocker cars, which is why they released the x1800xtpe while next to no one bought it, we all benefited from it's bios.
and yes they doi release overclocked versions, just not as dynamic as the nvidia counterparts, mostly because bfg and evgacan make there own pcb setup with nv and they can't with ati, nv makes the core and releases the memory to match, bfg and evga make the card, not the same with ati, so they would have less room for creativity so to speak. lol

anyways the reason i think they added the feature is probably due to the mass quantity of rma's due to volt modding. software controlled it's easier to spot a problem and much easier to set exact values, thus less rma's.

ATI has a more strict control of what GPU speeds are released and named. hence the anti-overclocking stance quoted.

Users overclocking, however is another matter...

i jus think yea....they dont like us overclocking but.....they had to make the cards more appeling to make up for the long delay. so the x1300 and x1600 can had thiers adjusted as well?

dunno, anyone with one have a comment?

ati implemented voltage control to drive down power consumption + heat output while in 2d .. reduced clocks and voltages .. but full power in 3d ...

if you look at overdrive you dont see any voltage controls there so ati didnt mean this voltage stuff to be as easily accessible as it is right now..

ah that make sense, w1zzard just took advantage of the voltage controls in the 2d 3d mode switch, had nothing to do with ati.
