With the next generation dual core, 65nm desktop CPUs Intel has ready to roll out in about 4 months, the company may regain some ground within gaming ethusiasts' circles. Initial tests, that were solicited by Intel on systems built by them, of the "Conroe" CPUs have it pummeling AMD's top, expensive Athlon FX CPU. And it does it at roughly the same speed (~170MHz slower than the FX, in fact.)

AnandTech sums it up nicely with These results are not meant to be definitive indicators of performance, but rather a preview of what is to come. Conroe is a CPU that Intel touts as a merger of Pentium-M technology of low power consumption and heat dissipation combined with what they've learned from the Pentium 4. It will be interesting to see the final product and if it will be the "gamers" choice for the next year or two.

Thanks but when I see the results from Intel CPUs people can buy then I'll know what's real and what's hype. Anandtech has become a pretty unreliable PC tech source. You may want to note that Intel's has been claiming they have quad core chips when in fact for IDF they had to glue two chips together and call it a quad core. Intel has a history of fraud so until they deliver the goods to the marketplace it's all just hype.

Finally amd has some competition.

i agree about anadtech, they've failed to make the benches fair in many occasions. but to overclock an fx60 so that it's performance is supposed to be like the fx62 is ridiculous, they're assuming that the fx62 will still be run on the toledo core on ddr1, two things we already know to be untrue. next well have to see what the actual launch does, the intel does seem pretty powewrful, especially for it's clocks.

Too bad the Fx-62 will be on DDR2 800, not some cheap ddr. With twice the bus speed, I think intel has a little more to worry about than a lightly overclocked fx62. Who knows, maybe amd will even enhance their cpus in the next year .

Looks like going back to PIII/M based architecture has paid off, we all knew that those chips did far more work per clock cycle than the P4 does. Intel should have released this microarchitecture instead of the high clock cycle, power hunger netburst architecture of the P4. I think they got caught up in the GHz wars and never paid attention to clock cycle efficiency. I'm sure AMD will make adjustments to their architecture and get more processing per clock cycle as well.

If these new intel cpu's are overclockable, then amd will be in trouble. The tests clearly show that intel has struck gold here. We'll have to see, but if it does top amd, intel is back in the game folks!

Intel costs too much, so in the end AMD will always win for budget builders.

Okay, all of you have great arguments but are overlooking a simple fact.

AMD mainstreamed their Opteron. AMD 64 (939pin) = Opteron - 1pin -SMP

AMD most likely has another core in their labs, waiting for Intel to bring Game to the table.

NO MULTI MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY MAINSTREEMS THEIR HIGH END PROCESSOR WITHOUT HAVING A NEW CORE READY TO GO. IT’S THE FUNDEMENTALS OF BIG BUSINESS.

AMD New their architecture would eventually conquer Intel's. Then they waited for Intel to Respond to their attack, (Conroe core), then AMD will Respond back. It’s the way the game has been played for years. But this time AMD is on top for best Market Proc, so far.

AS I HAVE TOLD MILLIONS AND MILIONS OF PEOPLE BEFORE YOU. IF NO ONE SUPPORTS THE COMPITITION (AMD), THEN WHO WILL. I DO NOT GIVE MY VOTE TO AMD FOR THEIR TECHNOLOGY; I GIVE IT TOP THEM FOR THEIR RESISTANCE AND OPPOSITION OF INTEL.

No single company can own a market. Without AMD's resistance, we would not have seen such leaps in processor technology nor the reduction in price of processors.

So to all you fans, good night and good luck.

Since AMD has been the performance leader for a few years, they havent had a reason until now to reveal something more powerful than their current tech. I'd give AMD a few weeks to show something before selling all your stock in AMD ;)

And even if AMD is a little slower per clock, AMD could ramp up its clocks beyond what conroe is capable of. The 939 Opterons have been known to hit 3 GHz on air.
