safe operating temp for 6800GS?

i was just wondering what the safe temps would be on the 6800GS. (i.e. ambient and core). also, is there a tool i can minimize to the system tray so that i can constantly monitor the temp? thanks in advance

edit: another thing i was curious about is, in RivaTuner, what should the voltage regulator output, voltage regulator temperature, and voltage regulator current be. thanks again.

You can use ATiTool to keep an eye on the temperatures of a 6800GS.

My 6800GS runs around 37-41 degrees celsius idle and around 53-63 degrees during load @ 100 % fan speed (which is audiable but is not too loud suprisingly) Environment temps for me range from 60-75 degrees ferenheit (outside temp). Temperatures inside the case range from 27-32 degrees celsius (will vary based on outside temp).

Try to keep load temperatures in the 60 degree celsius range. It would be possible that it could reach 70 degrees, which is ok but try to get below that if you overclock.

And about Rivatuner.. Sorry I dont have a lot of knowledge about it. I only use it for fan speed config.

ic, i suppose that i should not stick with the default fan? which fan/cooling unit would u, or anyone, recommend?...also, is it hard to intsall? Thanks for the reply

edit: btw, using ATITool to scan for artifacts @ default clock speeds i saw the core reach 89C!...should i have the fan always at 100% for all 3 fan options?

I recommend keeping the fan speed at 100% in both 2d and 3d clocks at all times.

If you want a aftermarket cooler, go for the more universal compatiblilty types like the Zalmans VF700CU and the next gen VF900CU (not in stores but specs at their site) The Zalman coolers have a wide range of compatability from both ATi and nVidia.

Also, airflow can be a factor in card temps. I have a 120 mm fan in the front and side which pulls 100 CFM (front) and 50 CFM (side) which helps with the temperatures in my case, especally with my red hot prescott.

Use the latest version of ATiTool for stablilty and compatibilty of the nVidia cards (version .25 beta 14)

I'm guessing you have the AGP version, which an hit 80°C+ temps, the stock cooler isn't good enough for these cards, get an Arctic Cooling Nv 5 Silencer, 90°C celsius isn't definitely healthy for your card, though I've heard of ppl getting such temps with the AGP 6800GS.
Mine would get to about 85°C under load before fitting my Tt Giant III to it...

I just noticed you had the AGP version of this card. They use those old hot chips (13 nm/NV40) instead of the newer chips (11 um/NV42) used on the PCI-e versions.

Before buying a aftermarket cooling, check if the heatsink is making contact with the core. If it is, go ahead and buy one.

The NV silencers gets the hot air from the heatsink out of the card and it exits out of the case, resulting in a overall temperature drop all around the case.

Get the Nv Silencer, it'll blow the hot air out of your case, lowering your overall system temperatures.

...but just wondering tho, since i have a Dell 4600, the case is quite closed, i.e. no case fans, only the fan is the one on the PSU...will the Nv Silencer still blow the hot air out of the case? thanks again

edit: i can get the Silencer Rv.3 for $40 whereas the the Silencer Rv.2 for $31...is it worth it to get the Rv.3? thanks

hm...i was also wondering, is it possible that i have a defective card?...i was reading thru all the reviews on newegg, and a couple ppl had the same situation (around 60C idle and 90C @load, could it just be that i have no case fans?...basically what im asking is, should i just RMA it or go with the NV Silencer? thanks again
