Just wondering

is this ssd drive worth it??

just wondering if it is worth right now to aim for ssd, I might grab one. Either that or buy RAM and go 8gb or purchase another hdd.

At this point I would say unless you're a bench fiend or in need of the newest of the new, I'd steer clear of SSD's, there's still some things that need sorted out. In about 6-months to a year from now they will be more worth it, right now the price is steep even at the lower prices...I'd rather have another one of my WD 640GB AAKS drives and another 4GB of ram, overall it'd bring more to the table than an SSD would. Sure SSD's can have some insane speed to them, but if you don't have the drives with cache, and you use that drive for an OS, be prepared for occasional hitching.

Really I don't think SSD's are ready for what many of us want from them, soon though. The technology is there, the price will get more realistic, the performance will improve. I suppose it depends on what you need and what you want from your PC, personally I'm steering clear of SSD's unless one get's tossed my way for very cheap, not interested...I'd rather have more space at something a little slower but still decent my HDD terms (the WD 640 that is).

i have the g.skill 64gb drive i just got for xmas as my boot drive, and with a few tweaks, i find it absolutely incredible. windows boots fast, things like the start menu and system folders like control panel open almost instantly. i had a little bit of a stutter issue getting started but after updating to the newest nforce drivers that all but went away. i'd say get the g.skill one if you were looking for something decent that wasn't too bad of a price

Those are some impressive results, I suppose for my sake I couldn't justify spending that much one a single 64GB drive when I could get 2 640GB drives that average 90MB/s, raid them and do quite well...though I am not much for RAID setups either so I'd just have a couple large drives lol!

Again, great performance, for those that feel the need to have it, like anything it comes at a price for sure! I'm still gonna wait, let's see what this game looks like in June around my b-day!

when you raid 4 of these vs 4 SAS(the 15,000RPM ones) the SSD wins buy a big amount.

These are made to be in raid-0 almost.

oh who's exited now huh!!! btw fromt he other thread about the stuttering, it's completely went away since i set up the new drivers, i did a nice new clean install on it today and i'll tell you, the thing is friggon screaming, i couldn't have asked for any more out of my first ssd, i'm extremely happy about the way it performs, things like ie, firefox, most small programs, open almost instantly on my computer now and it boots a hell of a lot faster as well.

250GB Segate 16MB x3 Raid Stripe.

Fast access time, and high reading speed, the only bad thing is low writing speed for SSD.

Slow access time, average read/write speed, everything is average for HDD, Lolz.

If you plan on storing big media files, or for storage, I wouldn't suggest a SSD.
SSD is for OS only.

lol, it's like every time you add a drive you double the performance lol... i need to order me a few more of these ssd's, i got 3 ports left on the ole mediashield nforce raid controller hehehehe, have a boot raid array with 4 ssd's doing 160 each, theoretically i could be doing about 600+ Mb/s lol

oh dang I didn't expect to see numbers like that on an SSD. I know I won't shove any games on it, that is what the 500gb hdd would be for.

Still after looking over the benchies I'm so tempted.

but my budget is small on this one, just got enough to get the 30gb ssd's so I might just wait on this one, damn...

Fry's is selling that Patriot Warp 32GB for 59.99 after a $30 MIR.

Now are they worth it? Well for that price of $59.99 (more or less half off), then yea...its worth it. But the problem is that Vista nor XP seems optimized to write data on a SSD, for they lack a onboard cache...and the current O/S is dumb to compensate for it. They are a lot of tweaks to compensate, but still not perfect.

I see yea I heard about that. There are stuttering issues. Guess they won't improve till windows 7, or at least I hope they improve with windows 7.

Totally worth it! It's the drive I currently use and I love it.

did u have to use any tweaks on it?? or you just loaded it up. I think I can swing a 30 gb off ebay with cashback for like 50 bucks. Either that or I will invest in more ram or another hdd.

also PQI made some ssd's based on intels MLC... think those are any good or should I steer clear.

I think it means that it uses Intel NAND chips, but does not have the Intel controller.

Having Intel or Samsung NAND chips makes no difference IMO.

It's the Intel controller that makes their SSDs so expensive.

yeah the intel ssd's are insanely good, but also insanely expensive. i'm getting awsome performance from my g.skill and i couldn't have been happier, i'm gonna wait a couple months and pick another one up for raid when i get the new computer in feb.

I see so to sum it up. SSD's from intel are very strong. in both read/write performance. Jmicron controller SSD's have good read/speeds but write speed is sloppy for large files/batches of small files.

damn I may have to hold off then because of the write speeds. Read speeds kick ass though.

to tellyou the truth if you do the basics, such as turn of superfetch/prefetcher indexing, search, and other write intensive tasks that you really have no need for anymore then you aren't going to notice. i just use it for my os and aside from the snappy windows performance and quick boot times, it's just a very fast drive and i didn't go out and buy some 500 dollar intel drive, i got my g.skill for xmas and just popped it in, reinstalled windows and bam here we are. check my benches, the read speeds are great for one drive and the 0.2 access time is insane, you don't know what you're missing.
