A chipset database, much like the CPU/GPU/Memory databases is in the making. This database will be made up of chipsets from Intel, Nvidia, ATI, Via, and ULI. We will want to include as much information on each chipset as we can get, but we need to make up a layout to do this. A list layout like the CPU Database might be too complex to use. So what we have in mind is a list of the chipsets, with a details page pertaining to each chipset.

Any user input and ideas are more than welcome - hence this thread. Please don't turn this thread into something irrelevant to what is on hand. Discussion on making this database better only please and thank-you.

-Dan :)

Chipset Database Information

This post is for the information of the chipset in the database details page. I will edit it as new ideas arise - it's just a start. If you know some specifications I missed or think that should be there, please post them. We're looking more for what specifications to have - where this is just an example, getting all the specifications correct is not a must.

This is an example using the i975X for a start on the information so we can have a bases for all the other chipsets.

You have whether it supports SLI or Crossfire. What if it didn't though? You would need to specify whether it supports PCI-Express or AGP. Also along that line, maybe a spot to show if it supports the PCI-Express bus or just regular PCI.

Great Idea! I like coming here for video card and processor info. a chipset database will be a welcome addition.

If it didn't support SLI or Crossfire, "N/A" would probably be put there. "Graphics:" specifies whether it has AGP, PCI-E or both as some of the ULI chipsets do. If you can come up with a better way to present that you're more than welcome to share.

If the chipset just supports PCI... well I don't know if chipsets that old will be in there. There will have to be some limits as information on things that old doesn't always come easy.

I see. I'm sorry. I just saw that it said "yes" under graphics. I assumed that meant integrated graphics.

southbridge features are also an important part of every chipset. although it's going to be more work, i highly suggest building a juxtaposed thread to this one including southbridges and the features that they offer so users don't have to leave the site to check out the southbridge features for every given chipset.

Another category I would be sure to add is whether or not it supports Hyper Threading.

This may be jumping the gun a bit :D, as you are still working to establish a solid format for the database, but here goes a suggestion to list in the DB:
This is a very versatile chipset, especially for all the people looking to upgrade, but keep some older components, with the whole conroe craze etc. A true "stepping stone" chipset:

Basics:
VIA PT880 Ultra
it supports Core 2's, P D's, P 4's, Celeron D's (conroe, presler, smithfield, prescott, cedar mill)
it supports AGP & PCIe graphics
it supports both DDR & DDR2

HT has to have the HT enable cpu, chipset and BIOS. So yeah, I would say we can put that in too.

By PCI-E lanes, do you mean just in the graphics slots? Like a single x16 slot, or dual slots? The "Graphics: 1 X 16x or 2 X 8x PCI-E" shows the amount of lanes according to the number of cards when dual card configurations are present.

Or do you mean the number of 1x/4x slots as well?

If chipset supports e.g. two PCIe x16 slots (both at x16) and one PCIe x4 slot, and you can have them all in use at the same time, the board supports at least 36 PCIe lanes. I think that's what W1zz meant... So ALL PCIe lanes, no matter to what kind of slots they're used.

reckon

For example on the DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D, there are 20 PCI express lanes. That makes for 16X on the GFX and 4X for other stuff.

alternatively, visit the manufacturers website of the board in question where all such info as this can be found :p lol sorry this seems kinda pointless to me. the gpu\cpu\dram databases have some use as specs for those kinda of things arent AS readily available, but for mainboards? manufacturers love showing off the size of their e-willy :p
