I am confused over which GPU to choose for my new rig. My pc config is Phenom 2 X4 920, 4 gb ram. I have a budget of 9K(INR). So help me out to decide on 4850 or GTS 250 or any other better card. Which mobo would be best for the combination den?

Out of those two, I would get the 4850. If I had to choose another card, it would be the 4890

Those two are an absolute draw as far as performance goes. Either one would perform very well from a mid-range standpoint. I have no idea about GPU prices in India, so I can't comment there. Go for the best deal.

Both cards are similar performance wise, there isn't a right or wrong decision. They are each others equivalents in the same price range from opposing companies.

However, the GTS250 1 GB is about 5-10% faster than the ATI 4850, although they both still compete with each other. Personally I'd get the cheaper of the two cards. I'd also consider the GTX260 (216 core version) the new GTX275.

What is the price of each card where you live?

Edit:

DX10.1 is backwards compatible with 11.

Good good, I didn't know that. Hopefully the 4850 is still powerful enough to drive games once DX11 takes off!

He's in India so those Newegg links don't really tell the story there. Most reviews I've read have shown only 4X AA at various resolutions and most show the GTS 250 beating the HD 4850. I was trying to be gracious saying they were the same in my first post, but the GTS 250 seems to have a slight edge.

DX10.1 is backwards compatible with 11.

From what I've read DX 11 will be compatible with both DX 10 and DX 10.1 hardware.

I still say the two cards are close enough he should grab the best deal, whatever brand that may be.

Not entirely true:

Current DX10.1 ATi cards are not fully DX11 compatible, only partially, we will have to wait and see what parts they will support, or if DX11 will even run on current hardware. DX11 might be an all or nothing type of deal, if the card isn't fully compatible, it might not work. But personally, I wouldn't worry about DX11 when purchasing DX10 cards.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but 2K INR is about 40 US dollars - that is a large price gap! Although the GTS 250 1 GB is the better choice. Price wise I think the ATI 4850 is the is feasibly the better deal.

As for the motherboard, its based on the AMD 790GX chipset so its good.

Personally I think you'd be better off with a cheaper board, one without crossfire, and put the rest of money on 8 GBs of ram or in a savings account.

Edit:

125 American Dollars is a stupid budget for a motherboard, ok there are exceptions e.g. breaking 3D Mark barriers etc. Phenom II 920 can run on any cheap Socket AM2/AM2+ motherboard, they cost $40-60. $60 can get you a high end one easy.

I think you need to re-evaluate your budget. Just because you have a $125 budget it doesn't mean you have to spend it.

DX10.1 is backwards compatible with 11.

Shouldn't that be DX11 is backwards compatible with DX10.1. Don't think its possible for an older version to be backwards compatible with a newer version.

i hated my 4850's i felt my system was crippled although they are good cards. I'd say go nvidia they are on the rise but only if your motherboard is sli capable. just my opinion

lol

Practically every single AM2/AM2+ motherboard is priced below $60.

These are UK prices

Asus M3A76-CM 760G Socket AM2+ £54.33inc vat
Asus M4N78 SE 720D Socket AM2+ £57.64inc vat
ASUS M3A78-EM 780G Socket AM2+ £60.97inc vat
ASUS M3N78 PRO GeForce 8300 AM2+ £61.52inc vat

Edit:

Ideally you want the 790GX or 790FX chipset if you want an extreme overclock. But a standard motherboard will still be enough for a modest overclock. The motherboard in which you posted is a great choice, I'd try and find the same chipset on a different brand motherboard for cheaper or sacrifice crossfire for a cheaper 790xX board.

Edit 2:

The saving can be put towards a better GPU, perhaps the GTX260 (216 core version), or GTX 275. Or as I said earlier in a savings account.

3:09am, bed time!

I am new into overclocking. I am thinking of overclocking my cpu to around 3.4 or 3.6 mark. Would these mobos do the job for me?

i don't know AMD motherboards. however i also agree that you should lower your budget on your motherboard, and increase your graphic card budget. What are the price on HD 4870's and GTX 260's over there?

Good good, I didn't know that. Hopefully the 4850 is still powerful enough to drive games once DX11 takes off!

DX11 is 99.95% compatible with the HD4800 series. Its about 85-90% compatible with the HD3800 series.

DX11 is 45-55% compatible with the GF8/9/GTX/GTS series. So all in all... ATI has a better architecture, its just drivers need to be improved ALOT more. ;-)
(btw- DX11 BETA is in "closed" beta .... ) You will see public trials of it in 6-8 weeks. Im fiddling with it now... works wonders with Havok.

3.4 GHz - 3.6 GHz is a average overclock, you could get that on a standard motherboard, you definitely do not need a high-end motherboard for that.

Post us a list of motherboards that you are considering and we will try and filter them out.

Indeed, but to be fair, regardless of the renaming scam and regardless of whether its an overclocked 9800GTX+, the GTS250 still performs better than the ATI 4850. We can bash Nvidia's ethical methods all day, but the card is faster.

By a very very very small margin, 2FPS or so, which is A: extremely easy to explain with margin of error, and B: Even more easily explained by the GPU speed. 4850 GPU: 650MHz, GTS250 GPU: 740MHz
