Well you were ready to spend money for two 4890 so one GTX285 is a far better option for your resolution.

How is 1 285 better than 2 4890's? :shadedshu

At your resolution 2 4890's in xfire is by far the best solution (if you can afford it).

And bang for buck the 285 isn't the best card.

1 GTX285 is far better for his resolution and cheaper than 2 4890s....Better now ?

It is almost 20fps faster in Crysis tho, according to the 4890 CF review. And I rather play in 42fps than 25.

If you get an GTX285 and OC it you will get more than 30fps in Crysis and for Crysis 30fps is more than enough. Plus you will also spend less to get it, will have a cooler system and will relative have a lot less power consumption.

Everyone who says "30fps in Crysis is more than enough" is lying either to themselves or everyone else.

Crysis, like every other FPS will be much more enjoyable @ 60 FPS or higher.

If you only care about Crysis then just get a GTX295. A GTX275 is not even faster than 4850 crossfire and since you have a crossfire board any single GPU Nvidia card would be A WASTE OF TIME.

Your best upgrade path is 2 x 4980, a GTX 295, or a 4870x2.

I get more than 30FPS in Crysis right now.. and so should you since we have almost the same system .. what would you "upgrade" to get less performance?

First of all Crysis is NOT like any other game. Crysis feels great at 30fps whereas other games do not. That is just how the engine is built and thats that.
Now 2 4850s in CF may hit 30fps and that is a big may, considering that 1 4850 never goes above 18fps in Crysis so 2 of them would hardly reach 30fps at 1680x1050, unless you are running the perfect CF which has a 100% performance boost with 2 cards, which i doubt. I will start Crysis now with my GTX285 XXX and post a screen to see how many fps this card gets when slightly OCed.

I can run crysis 1 with all the patches on my 4870x2 if you want an idea on the performance even tho i have a Diamond XOC version and my 4870x2 is on water:D

Crysis has been very smoothly. Some lagging if you start a game or load, but then without (or almost without) lagging. But the level after you finished off those first nanosuit guys is just laggy as hell.

Crysis IS just like any other game. Go ahead and play Crysis @ 30FPS for an hour and then change to a system that plays the same settings @ 60FPS.. if you try to tell me that the gameplay and overall experience is exactly the same on both system then you are simply lying.

The game plays smoother, faster, and is generally more enjoyable the closer to your FPS gets to 60.

Make sure you have Catalyst AI set to Advanced to keep crossfire scaling. I know in Warhead crossfire can get disabled when it loads or quick saves.

If you consider the engine of Crysis the same with any other engine well theres not much i can say. I will just show you the screenshot bellow to see that a single GTX285 goes up to 37fps and that is without the maximum possible OC.

The engine is not the same as any other game.. My point is that the game plays much better with more FPS and comparatively 30 FPS feels like garbage against 60 FPS. This is a PC shooter and as such it is more enjoyable with it is runs smoother.

Also, a GTX285 is a poor upgrade choice for anyone who already owns crossfire 4850s and a crossfire motherboard.

It is a single card that runs cooler than 2 4850CF, consumes less power and supports PhysX.
Why poor upgrade ? Plus i doubt that 2 4850 in CF can reach 37fps with these settings.

It will be hard to tell since you're running it on an i920 @ 3.6 VS a C2D @ 3.6 (my specs need to updated).

Are you running it on Stock Enthusiast or on a modified config. The point of this thread was not to compare the GTX285 to the 4850 crossfire rather the 4890 crossfire.

Still for power consumption and physx its nice but it still wont run DX11 and the GTX285 still limits his upgrade path for the sake of maybe 15% in Crysis and -15% in every other game.

4890 in CF cost more and for 1680x1050 i consider it to be overkill.

Yes the GTX285 does not support DX11 but neither does the 4890.

I would advise him to either keep the dual 4850s overclock them a bit and wait to get a DX11 card or get the GTX285.

Ok I didn't expect to start such a discussion, lol.

Good arguments vs. good arguments, yay. I have to plan a little bit ahead then.

No card on the market currently can run full dx11.

On topic CF 4890s would be awesome in crysis as my 4870x2 can run on max settings 1680x1050 dx10 at well over 35fps in all areas all the time in the early levels (upto when you find prophet in the snow covered island - havn't replayed later levels on my new card yet).

dx10.1 cards should offer fairly good compatibility with DX11.

Well i consider a GTX285 to be a real upgrade but because of DX11 in a few months i can't really recommend him to get a new card.

In a state of flux...
Drop DX11 out the equation, the OP didn't state that was a must for buying a GPU; he did however say he wanted to play Crysis maxed out.

Crossfire 4850s are at least as fast as a GTX280, so why "upgrade" to a GTX275 when he has a Crossfire motherboard? It makes about as much sense as swapping out a Q9550 to a PII 945...both of them are pretty much equal and you wont see any difference in real world scenarios...aside from your e-peen getting bigger because you can waste money on something that's effectively the same as you had before.

The only true upgrade path for the OP is either a GTX295, a 4870x2 or Crossfire 4890s....NOTHING else will be A, worth the money or time and B, give better results than what he already has.

So, by process of elimination and without bias views or fanboy mentalities, the 4890 Crossfire solution is the best bang for buck and will allow him to run Crysis and whatever resolution he wants.

Bottom line: Go with the Crossfired 4890s and be happy, no other solution will be better for what you want...and its faster than the top tier product from either nVidia or ATI. :toast:

Actually according to AMD even a 4890x2 would not be able to beat the GTX295, they would perform the same more or less, if that matters to you at all.

The fact that he did not mention DX11 does not change the fact that after the summer we will start seeing DX11 solutions, so why spend money now for a card and not keep his 4850CF for 6 more months ?

And the GTX285 is faster than 4850s in CF, not much i agree but it is.

Okay, taken from those three cards, in price range, it looks like this:
295 < 4890 CF < 4870x2

NOW in W1zz' 4890 CF review, the 4890s dominate the 295. However, they suck more power.

Gnar. Still a tough decision.
