Well in all my massive knowlage I turned off a service and now its affecting my OS. Problem is I am not sure which service to turn back on to fix this issue.

Heres the problem.

I delete a file and it doesn't move. However when I refresh the window it gives me an error to the effect of "File location is not available" and BAM the files in the trash like it should have been to begin with. Some service I think updates the registry but man I don't know.

No idea. Reinstall time. In the future, don't disable any processes when you don't know what they are/what they do.

Try turning back on the shadow copy provider.

I never do. Thats why I was confused. Anyway I figured it out.

Try turning back on the shadow copy provider.
I was going to do a restore point then I figured out what it was. Windows updated this morning and I never restarted. Once I restarted the problem was gone.

Thanks for posting what fixed it, MM.

I know I blow it off regularly.

It didn't tell me to. I didn't even know. I only noticed because of the restore point.

I've had a similar problem but I never found the cause. It only seems to effect files that I'm deleting out of my user's "Documents" folder (in Win7 x64 build 7600).

Of course this isn't an issue because my "Documents" folder only contains semi-nudes of MailMan which I would never delete. :pimp:

Here's all the services I have disabled as recorded in my personal Windows 7 tweaking log:
Services Stopped
Both Homegroup services
UPnP Device Host
Windows Update
Program Compatibility Assistant Service** (stupid messages about "did it install correctly you ---------")
Disk Defragmenter
Windows Search Service
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Offline Files
SSDP Discovery
Portable Device Enumeration
WLAN AutoConfig
WWAN AutoConfig
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Function Discovery Provider Host

**Turns out it is needed to run some Windows XP programs without compatibility mode

Potentially Off:
IP Helper

Coditionally back on:
SSDP Discovery
UPnP Device Host

Turn on distributing link tracking client.

Honestly there is a few on there you should leave on.

It's quite alright to disable:
http://wiki.blackviper.com/wiki/Distributed_Link_Tracking_Client

I do not create shortcuts to networked files ever. I learned my lesson back on XP with the "million years to right click menu" glitch that occurs when associations cannot resolve network dependencies.

Someone, whom I can't recall, posted a link to blackviper's site and I find it quite informative. I should mention that all the services I have disabled were disabled from the minute I finished installing Win7 (and without any prior knowledge of the fantastic Black Viper website).

I sure do hope that you're going to back that up with some sort of enlightening commentary.

+1 if i remember correctly that sight had reg backups that where supposed to set everything to default on vista/win7 they where truly full of fail and just made things worse

if chkdsk /r, SFC SCANNOW cant fix it just reload it, that's why my windows stay on its own partition.

It's a good thing you posted some corroborating evidence because MailMan was, and is, indisposed.

I never said I'd trust every word on Black Viper, but it does appear to have (at least) some decent info on it. I definitely wouldn't download anyone's registry backups because Windows 7 provides them for you....

C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack <-- Original backup (iirc)
Other (more recent) backups can be pulled out of System Volume Information directory if you have System Restore enabled.

For future reference , blackviper also contains a list of default settings in case you can`t remember changing a service. There are TONS of guides and references like this on the web if you don`t like blackviper.

Sorry, tend to dis-agree.
BlackViper's is a very good resource.
BlackViper's website is informative, however, anything you do in windows registry, services, processes, etc.; you need at least a working knowledge of what you are doing.
Or, you are just going to end up hosing your OS.

And, just some info - it is "sfc /scannow" with a space between the "c" and "/".

Sorry for the delay in response but some of us have jobs.

Anyway Black Viper says you can turn off services that you really shouldn't. Now I'm not saying you can't but looking at what you turned off I don't think you have a working knowledge of services. OR maybe you just don't care.

Distributing link tracking client
Maintains links between NTFS files within a computer or across computers in a network.

See that one for instance is not something you should kill. Can you run without it? Sure. But some anti-virus programs will not be as effective. Hell some won't even work right. But THAT wasn't told to you on Black Viper.

I thought your job was posting on TPU. ;)

Now I'm not saying you can't but looking at what you turned off I don't think you have a working knowledge of services.
In that assumption you would be wrong. I'm not going to go the route of listing my experience, but suffice to say it is ample.

Some of the services I've disabled have been replaced with other software. Some services I'd like to leave enabled but they interfere so much with my day to day operations that I have to keep them disabled. Program Compatibility Assistant is one such service, but it's ultimately unnecessary because it's features can be switched on manually (without enabling the service).

See that one for instance is not something you should kill. Can you run without it? Sure. But some anti-virus programs will not be as effective. Hell some won't even work right.
It's not something you should kill, but I'm not you. I'm not planning to explain my antivirus methodology but it does not rely on any such programs.

But THAT wasn't told to you on Black Viper.
But IT twas:
With AVG Antivirus 2011 (Version 10.0.1152 on Windows XP SP 3 x86) is that the "Distributed Link Tracking Client" must be set to "Automatic" and "Started" or the AVG scan function will not work properly. Setting the service to Manual does not work since scan does not signal the service to start.

As I mentioned I've been doing this stuff long before I ever heard of Black Viper's site.
