Hold on, Is Overclocking a video card very different from OCing a CPU?

Lol, I don't get it.

Is OCing a video card in windows?

Rivatuner/Ntune amirite?

you've got to remember that without aa the 2900's and 3870's aren't too bad either, aa is important in gaming, and it seems like the 8800ultra still has the overall single gpu performance crown.

Without AA 9800 GTX has the edge, with AA Ultra is ahead, but 9800 GTS it's still close. And it's a lot cheaper. Even with AA off Radeons are on another league.

Anyway I am not impressed by the raw performance of the card, but by the great improvement over the GTS, and it's with AA on when we can see the greater improvement. I guess that since all the people was saying this card would be just an slightly overclocked GTS, and early reports were more or less confirming this, it took me by surprise the real performance of the card.
It's been an odd process in my mind, since I first thought this card would be faster than 8800 GTS. 9600 GT, with it's new compression features confirmed me I was on spot, but later I got convinced that the card would be just a GTS. And in the end the card is significantly faster, more than what I ever thought. It features the same compression thing of the 9600 GT and it's as good as the latter in overclock and SLI. I'm of the opinion that if 9600 GT is G94, this one could have been called G91/G93 without a problem. It's just not the same chip, it's G92 rev 2. or something but not the same.

Here are some initial OC results, as the guantlet was thrown...

Of interest, I guess, is that when the mobo was overclocked to 3.6 GHz, there was only a minor improvement to the 3DMark06 result from the test with a CPU clock of 3.4 (posted earlier) - The GPU was stock in the 3.6 CPU OC test as I forgot to reset nTune after a crash with an attempt at 830 and 1250.

With the CPU reduced to 3.4, and a conservative GPU setting of 800 and 12000 there was a modest increase (see screenshot below).

I will be trying more... note that the CPU overclock is very basic, just an increase to the FSB, and nothing else. (ie no voltage or timing tune)

Holy hell with the arrival of these cards pretty much all the 8800 series significantly dropped
except the 8800gs

Cool... That pretty much translates to 15000 with a Quad, isn't it?

I would expect that much from a quad for sure...

On another note, my OCing has been slowed due to a "forceware fight" - the latest drivers gives me this:

While I must argue that infact the OS in use is actually Vista 32-bit:wtf:

So back to the driver from the CD.

Solved that problem, Vista decided to run the installer as "Win XP compatible". Running 174.74 now.

Now the run32dll thing. (Seems to pop up after GPU or CPU Z is either started or closed??) I hope the 174.74 driver takes care of this as if this error pops up, 3DMark06 hangs. I actually found that CrossfireX ran without issue...

Looks like the timings above (842 and 1260 from the overclockers club) are more than this particular card will take. It seems to be on the bleeding edge of stability at 830 and 1235, with no change to the PCIE freq. (stable in nTune but crashes 3DMark...so I'm backing the timing down and rebooting after rundll shows up - taking time)

As for general OC, any CPU bottleneck seems to be relieved at 3.4 or above, as scores on 3Dmark06 do not increase after that (for me - dual core only). 3.6 does have the NB running much warmer than usual, in the low 50 deg range. This is OCing the RAM to 900 (from 800) which could also be an issue.

It should be easy to tell that I am new to OCing at this point. All that to say is I will ramp up the GPU with the MB at 3.4 for a few more trys, just to see, and then get back to Crysis which is why I got the thing in the first place.

Enjoy,

Paul

Err why do you guys buy this when the 8800GTS 512MB provides the same performance?

Why must you troll this message in every 9800GTX thread. We've already told you the reasons why.

Benchmark Scores It does boot up? I think.
Would some brave owner of a 9800GTX want to try out a vGPU mod?
;)

It seems that after a few trys that a MB OC, in this case, is limiting the GPU...I think it is a RAM issue. So more MB OC knowledge need to happen.

Max numbers that 3DMark06 will complete with MB running at 3.4 and ram at 850 are 805 and 1210 (I have been using increments of 5) and those numbers don't really show any improvement of the numbers posted above.

Out of interest I will try to find the max GPU OC with the motherboard stock and see what happens. I expect to get more out of the GPU (as I think the OC'ed RAM is the problem) but a lower number overall as the test is influenced so massively by CPU speeds.

I'll let you know how it goes...

Paul

Oh yeah, the run32dll.exe issue seems to be gone with 174.74 and no vGPU mod for me!

Thing is, I'm trying to justify the £30~ difference in price between this and the 8800GTS..
Just not sure how far you can push a GTS towards these standard clocks, or even past it..
Might be going '98 GTX then ;)
