ok i ran some tests and screen shotted the results.

palit sonic 9600gt
stock speeds 700/1750/1000
overclocked 912/2280/1096

i used the vmod i listed on the last post of page 7 for vmodding the core. i need to run by radio shack later this week and pick up a 100k vr to do a vmem mod, my card has samsung mem so i think i could get a few more mhz out of the mem. actually now that i think of it, i didnt really push the mem yet lol.

not much room left in the mem. got it to 1140 but 1150=crash

Ranger's Palit/Gainward vMod Thread:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=59372

I can vouch that it works, I did the 1.38v vGPU mod, and it works like a charm, first try. I didn't attain those clocks and pass ATI Tools Artifact Scanner, but I did attain 870/2175, didn't change memory, I don't feel a need to...70GB/S is pretty damn healthy bandwidth, especially for a mid-range card...it's what my x1950xtx was gettin w/gDDR4 at way worse timings lol! This was the first run with my q6600, and it was a "dirty" run...which is how I do it anymore...I get sick of modifying startup crap and closing everything...I don't do it for games...so I no longer do it for benchies lol! My score is attained from how I game, and that makes me proud when I score decently! :D

On a side note, temps do increase quite a bit from my findings...I did keep the shroud on, but went from my original OC of 810/1950 running 55% fan speed for 32C idle, 44C load to 38C idle and 66C load, increased fan speed to 60% to drop load to 65C, 100% is too annoying...but those temps aren't that bad, if I dislike em' too much I could always slap an AC S1 rv2 cooler and fan on it! :D

But none-the-less I'll post my updated results here.

EDIT 2: 5160 in 3D Mark Vantage - http://service.futuremark.com/home.action?resultId=76707&resultType=19

updates are done...
I'm wondering about the attachments. Would I use a link to the user's post where the attachment is located?

So far, it should have cpu-z (cpu tab and mem tab), gpu-z and the bench results. Does this sound adequate?

it seems a little excessive after some thought.
Could peoples post two attachments; one of cpu-z (two instances running cpu and mem tabs open), and a gpu-z verified link of the oc.
This should give us enough info on the hardware. If not, let me know.:rockout:

:)Sweet, can't complain about that.
Have you heard of any other reference 9600GT models running at higher than 1.1 volts idle? Mine is set higher (1.17V) and I can't help but think there may be an answer or two waiting to be noticed.

not too impressed...
I removeed the cooler to get a look. First thing that caught my attention were the thick pink thermal pads on everything except the gpu. The gpu had way too much thermal paste, it extended more than an eigth of an inch past the chip and was an eight thick in that area as well. I replaced it all with ac5. Looking at the thermal pads for the mem, I noticed there wasn't much of an indent. at this point I'm considering there may be a gap after reassembly.
Well, after reassembly, temps have dropped but I lost some mem oc because there is now a visable gap between the mem and cooler.
Hrmmn... don't think filling the gap with ac5 is too good an idea. I suppose it's time to pick up some gmem sinks and see how the V.2 fairs on this card.

Yeah. Don't you love that chewing gum they use for thermal pads

The reason they use the chewing gum is that it takes up mechanical slop in the assembly. AS5 is great stuff but it is meant for close to zero gap (i.e. it is not a gap filler).

What I did with an X1950PRO that I used to have was to use AS5 on the core but I just reused the thermal pads on the memory. The memory is less of a thermal issue than the core so that was OK.

But using VGA memory heatsink is better assuming that you put a dedicated cooler on the GPU. I think you said you were going WC so that should work out great for you. BTW I just used the thermal tape to attach the memory heatsinks. If I ever end up selling the 9600GT I will want to return it to stock since will keep my GPU water block for the next card.

well the wc will have to wait a month or so, blew the project budget on aluminum for a new case this month. I still have my V.2 on an 8600gt so it will get swapped. i just need to get some ram sinks. I have the alum ones that came with the V2 but they need new tape. I'll get some mc21's too. It's working fine at clock speeds, but why wait.

Definitely get the MC21's on your power section. See my photo below that shows the 3 groups of 3 FETS that are covered by the heatsink. Also, if you have an extra VGA RAM heatsink I would throw it onto the other power device that is circled in yellow. That guy also gets toasty.

Given that we seem to be fighting power issues it makes sense to ensure good cooling in the power section methinks.

Oh. I get your question now. No, the pencil mod is only for makeshift resistors. You want a short circuit so either conductive ink or a soldering iron is required. The soldering iron is pretty straight foward but you need a fine tip, steady hand, and good eyes. I use a very fine piece of wire (one strand from a stranded speaker wire works well), leave it long, coat it in solder, lay it across the two points using the long handle that you have left on it, and then dab solder on top, and use an exacto knife to cut off the long end. Sounds complicated but its pretty easy.

Guys, this is my best to run to date, no mods. Can't seem to get higher clocks like I've seen in this thread. Since its starting to get warmer in Chicago area, could heat be limiting these cards? Sorry no gpuz screenie, this shot was for another thread. 730 on gpu, 1850 on shaders and 940 on ram. Any advice. Have an antec side case fan blowing directly on them.

What temps are you hitting on your cards?

Could you post a GPU-Z screeny? That way Skitz can add ya to the list.

That's not a bad OC by any means, you may try a single card and OC it just to see if there's something else holding you back. I don't know much about SLI, but I am assuming it's clocks will match the slowest card? I dunno..I have never been a fan of the SLI/CF for my needs at least. But that's a very good 3DM score, how does it game? That's more of what I'm about! :D

And in reality that's not a bad OC, granted I could hit a bit higher than you on all fronts w/o a mod (810/1950 1100(2200)), nothing OC's the same and I can only assume that the power spread of that system could be a hindering factor, though you have a dedicated PSU just for the cards...hard saying. You could reseat your heatsinks with some decent TIM and see if you could attain better clocks that way, or even install a couple of aftermarket coolers.

I'd say start with a single card run, maybe on each to see how high they go independantly just for verifacation, if I was in your shoes, that's where I'd start digging.

One card is hitting like 65c, the other is in the low 50's. That was another question I was going to ask, the disparity in temps between the 2 cards in sli. This computer games excellent in imo.:D I do know my benches are down somewhat because I'm not duel booting, all benches are in vista 64, so keep that in mind too. Is this score low for 2 9600gt's in sli? I will post gpu-z screenie.
