tsmc produces the gpu .. they get send a bunch of masks and thats it

The 4850 is going to have 650HP on a Large Block V8 with 900 Ft/lb torque. I don't know where you guys get your facts from, but that info right there is legit.

Its true, and the 4870 is on a flat 4 and generates 1000hp with 600lbs of torque@1200rpm

Lies. I heard it was going to have a supercharger and push 732HP and 912lb/ft of tourque...

the problem with 480 or 800 shaders comes from the architecture:

see the yellow thingies inside the red shader blocks? the big question is how many of these are in the rv770 per red block.

if it's 5 then 800 is correct (160 * 5 = 800)
if it's 3 then 480 is correct (160 * 3 = 480)

800SP??? Unexpected, heard a lot of reviews saying 750SP.

And how does this make sense:
4870 uses GDDR5
4850 uses GDDR3 WTH

Btw the card is actually nice.

Hmmm, 800 looks more likely. I don't think they'll pack three ALU's per D, continue with 5. Otherwise they could have reached 480D using (96 *5) opposed to (64*5) on R600/RV670 instead of (160*3).

Ram speeds have not really been an issue lately... Its been helping minimally, I clock my gpu to 750 I gain a ton, I clock my ram to 1000+ I gain next to nothing at any gpu clock...

even if 800SP. unfortunately i doubt it means 2.5x RV670 performance target.

besides.. what good will you do 1 million shaders .. shaders can not be compared to each other by count only. why is g80 with 128 shaders not 2.5x slower than hd3870 ?

W1zzard makes another good point... Its all design, just because its heavy shader doesn't mean its going to fly, just means the distribution of processing is shared differently.

I doubt we are going to see any "double" the performance of cards anytime real soon.
20-30% maybe a bit more I can see, but I don't think we are near any huge jumps, they finally just got power consumption back down a bit, now they gotta work it back up and knock it back down again.

Because 128 'unified shaders' don't compare to 128 'stream processors', stream processor is a term coined by ATI but has sort of become universal now.

defi agree with that. TBH, though, I'd like to see some GDDR4 for base models, but it's been starting to look like everyone is trying to get away from it for some reason . . . and nVidia won't even touch the stuff.

agree here, too - I don't think either camp will be releasing 2x performance over last-gen anytime soon.

But, IMO, I think AMD/ATI stand to probably see a bigger performance gain with their new series than nVidia would - it's looking so far like ATI went back and addressed some key issues that have been holding their cards back for a while - namely, independant shader clocks.

But, how well they actually perform remains to be seen . . . I think the anticipation of it is starting to drive many users insane; enough so that we keep hearing a lot of dribble left and right.

nVidia is running a 512bit bus, I don't think GDDR5 is necessary they also doubled there shaders don't count nVidia out
