Upgrading from Crucial Ballistix Tracer 4x1gb to 2x2gb

Do you guys think its worth me upgrading from 4x 1gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer 1066Mhz to 2x2gb for Crucial Ballistix Tracer 800Mhz? will i get a drop in performance

I dont think you will see a drop in performance. With ddr2 800 you can run it with tighter timings. Plus with 2 x 2 GB that will allow you to OC the memory easier and higher than 4 x 1 GB sticks. Leaves room for upgrade. I love using DDR 800. Plus it is perfect for most systems right now as it still has not reached its potential.

If anything, theory would state that 2x2 would be faster as it doesn't have to use 2 dual channel for the same amount of memory. In practice, probably not enough of a difference to notice.

you will stalemate or even possibly downgrade see my comments in this thread Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2x2 PC-6400 are NOT Micron D9 they are PowerChip at the very least, Micron D9HNL at best.

I thought so too but i was told it's the other way around: it's easier to OC 4*1 GB then 2*2 GB.

With my previous systems, before this Phenom, I noticed it was much easier and had better potential overclocking with the minimum of memory I could get away with. I believe it has something to do with the memory phase that the less DIMM it has to provide the more voltage can be used for the rest of the system even though memory voltage doesn't require much but when oc'ing can be the difference of being stuck @ 290FSB or getting over that 300FSB hump.

you can't. either Micron or Crucial doesn't etch on the info anymore. just says "Ballistix" mushkin does the same I suspect this is the standard.

this what they say, on all 4 (BL12864AL1065.16FD3) i don't oc much so does it matter? and what are better out of the old Crucial Ballistix Tracer or the new SE Crucial Ballistix Tracer RED

they are Micron D9 lol thats about all I can tell ya. did you purchase them in 2007? they are probably the older ones. I would be happy with what you got.
