maybe if games were to take advantage of the texture fillrate in the 4870 to a considerable extent (and last time I checked there isn't a TWIMTPB program for AMD right now) the significance of that improvement would show itself, maybe some ingame tests ?

still, if I were to buy a new card today, I would choose the 4870 with it's price/performance ratio, unfortunately it's heat and power ratio isn't that far from nvidia's (3870 does smoke all cards atm for power and heat, and the fact of the single power plug), but from a price-performance-heat-power point of view, the 4870 isn't that far off the 3870, and the 3870 X2 is still kickin

Well thats the thing.
When it comes to benchmarks, how much does it really relate to real world gaming.
Not that much from what I can see.

3870X2 is a good example.
Certain games get micro stutters with it even though the benchmark is very impressive.

I suppose at the end of the day it depends what the person finds more important.

I card which plays games with steady frames or a card which gives high very high frames but has annoying intermittent stutters and pauses all the way through the game.

The 4870 X2 might have this fixed though.

Runs fine with Furmark stability test and tops out at 63C with a 60% fan setting. Overclocked with AMD GPU Clock Tool.

dude, need cpu-z and gpu-z in same screen shot.

that's odd I don't experience what you describe in anything I play at the moment (grid 1600x1200 everything on highest+4xmsaa, FEAR 1600x1200 everything on highest 4xfsaa, bioshock 1600x1200 everything on highest+4xfsaa), there are some places in fear and bioshock where the framerate drops to about 40 or 50 but no stutters or pauses at all, always smooth, just temporarily reduced performance until the scene changes, you might be having problems with something unless reduced framerates is what you mean by stutters, I define stutters is when the whole thing just completely stops (0 fps) for a while and then continues to render until does the same thing again, it happend to me only once long ago (6 months) before I had my videocard cooled by water when it was reaching almost 100 C it started to stop for a 3 seconds and then resume, that totally sucked

but what really sucks the most is that using 2 cards crossfire or SLI does not improve performance much

I own a HD4850 and it runs very smooth in all well coded games.
I have seen some issues with COD4 and GIRD it think in some system with the X2 3870.

from here it looks like the 4870 isn't as good as it's engineering improvements are:
14155 - Darknova - E8400 @ 3.6ghz 4870 @ 750 Core 900 Mem
I got a score of 12080 at 3360 mhz with e6750 with 958.50/1179 with a hd 3870
I expected the 4870 to give alote more punch and smoke it bad (6000 points higher at least, I expected more like 8000)

and even oli's new improvement (btw is that maximum ? water ? voltmod ?) at 850/1125, doesn't impress me as much as I hoped it would: (excluding cpu clocks)

SM2 - my 3870: 5120, oli's 4870: 6648 = 1528
SM3 - my 3870: 5709, oli's 4870: 8188 = 2479
CPU - my 6750: 3002, oli's 8400: 3691 = 689
Total excluding CPU differences: 10829, 14836 = 4007

granted 4000 points is an improvement in graphics performance, but when looking at both card from the engineer's point of view (and not to mention the impact of the cpu on graphics performance with 640 more mhz, 2 more MB of L2, and the improvements done to the L2 in the 45nm compared to the 65 (IPC is probably 1.3, might say that's it's an 840 mhz higher in linear terms)) it should have done ALOTE better, expecting 8000 points I think is ok, disappointing

maybe if games were to take advantage of the texture fillrate in the 4870 to a considerable extent (and last time I checked there isn't a TWIMTPB program for AMD right now) the significance of that improvement would show itself, maybe some ingame tests ?

still, if I were to buy a new card today, I would choose the 4870 with it's price/performance ratio, unfortunately it's heat and power ratio isn't that far from nvidia's (3870 does smoke all cards atm for power and heat, and the fact of the single power plug), but from a price-performance-heat-power point of view, the 4870 isn't that far off the 3870, and the 3870 X2 is still kickin

And? Benchmarks don't mean a thing when it comes to real-world performance. I'm running Crysis at 1680x1050 at Very High and it runs smoothly, no hiccups or anything and it looks fantastic.

I am very impressed with my 4870 and it's the best purchase I've ever made when it comes to graphics cards.

No problem. I flashed the Asus TOP bios yesterday (while keeping my device vendor ID) and this is what I get now:

im not running crysis, but as for all that I AM running I am running with everything on highest and also don't have any problems, also fantastic, I think it's also the best purchase i ever made considering the price, even if benchmarks don't mean anything, the benchmarks DO show differences between various cards, but based on those differences I can't justify buying a 4850 or a 4870 to replace the 3870, maybe if there was 10,000 points difference (graphics-only without cpu score) it would be justified, not a revolution, just a revelation of how much the AMD *8*** can be improved, and from the looks of it, not much, which should be considered good (not much to improve because it was originally designed good).

I wouldn't call them 48** but rather, 3970 and 3950, and I think the only reason that it's not it's name is marketing

I've come from a 3870, and even though my benchmark scores have only gone up 3,000 points over my overclocked 3870 the price was well worth it. The 3870 was lacklustre, especially when it came to AA and AF, turn that on and you'd take a performance hit anywhere from 20-80% depending on the game. The 4870 can run 2-4x AA with 1-5% perf hit depending on the game.

And the fact that the same architecture with tweaked shader units can put up a good fight against nvidias monolithic GPUs is an incredible feat for AMD.

yhe I just checked the price of the 4870 it is the same as 3870 was 6 months ago when I bought it.

yes, these two points are significant feats for AMD, but I thought that to buy a new card would need more than feat but also major preformance increase, if you drop the AA and AF and the shader utilization in the games, you don't have much left, which worries me, cause pixel fillrate didn't increase all that much

Pixel Fillrate actually fell slightly, but in most of the games I play I'm getting double the FPS I was before, in others 50%+ so to me that justifies the price increase. Just because my benchmarks aren't much much higher to me means nothing. Benchmarks tend to be skewed by "performance increases" in new driver releases, so in a few months you'll more than likely see 5-6000 point increases over the 3870s.

Your CPU score seems low for the speed it is running at.
Overall seems like a very low score for 4870.
Must be something wrong.

Hey guys, this is not a 48xx series card, but i'm just hoping you guys can tell me what you think about my score. I used to get around 10k all the time with my athlon x2, felt like crap, I though the 2900xt was a POS. Now that I have the Phenom x4 this card is really shining. Just want to know what you guys think :)

It is a X2 not quad also it is AMD and is the regular cpu score for these chips. hey Chicken where is the cpu score for that result?

@Lester- see if you can find a propper bios for that motherboard...(you didnt say which one it is)

you need to run that q6600 @ 3.6-3.8ghz as anything lower will bottleneck your card...

as you have a machine which has come pre-crippled i would forget about benchmarking and just be happy playing games...

use the time you have now learning how to replace your componants...

i'd say you'll need-

psu-seasonic m12 700w
motherboard-wait for bloomfield
ddr2 or ddr3 depending on which mb you go for... 6gb of ddr3 would be the best as you will be able to run tripple channel on a nehelam/bloomfield cpu/mb combo...
definatly dont skimp on the hard drive... i would recommend a samsung f1 1tb
and vista ultimate 64bit....

and dont go buying a dell/hp/pcworld rig ever again....lol good luck
