Dog having erratic breathing/snorting issues - Any help?

In general my dog is in good health however just recently has been having random difficulty in his breathing at least once a day. It's like he starts making noises like he is choking or is having breathing difficulty, tries to breathe in through his nose but can't and then has to catch his breath. Sometimes he will calm down by just having a fuss made of him whilst it is happening but last night it was more prolonged and he did not want fuss, just wanted to be near my girlfriend and I. There really is no set pattern as it can occur indoors or outdoors and it seems weather conditions have no effect on it either. He is 7 1/2 yrs old, a chocolate labrador and suffers from mild arthritis which is controlled by a vet prescribed medication , just to note, this was occurring before any medication had been started.

If anyone else has had a dog which has suffered from the same or similar symptoms please give me the benefit of your experience as we would both like to get to the bottom of this. Thanks everyone

my chihuahua has a similar thing, but its more of a cough that goes on for about 10 minutes on average but sometimes when it bad it lasts for 30 minutes.she will just start this coughing-choking
kind of thing and she panics and tries so hard to control it.almost like she's trying to hold her breath.but she cant.sometimes she just abouts gets it to stop and boom full on cough/choke.i dont know what causes this, ive gotten kind of used to it now.i used to try and calm her down thinking i was helping but,im pretty sure i have no affect on it.

Thanks for your response mate, could you just say what the exact symptoms were, you see we have felt his neck and all around it but cannot find any lumps.

well she was very old at the time but the first thing we noticed was a very runny nose, then she used to get out of breath allot and wasn't as energetic as usual, but again we just thought this was age and thought nothing of it. she would try to breath in through her nose but it sounded like it was bloked then her breathing would faulter she'd pant through her mouth then back to normal, she practicly always breathed with hermouth open too even when just led down. it was the catching her breath that made us have her checked an found the growth, i hope its nothing as bad as that mate

heh... all jokes aside, if you think it is something serious go see a real vetenarian. There are those at TPU that are medically wise however none of us can actually help you (or your dog). We can give you advice but that's about as far as it goes.

Yeh I realise that, although Wizzard moves in mysterious ways Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced the same sort of thing with their pet so that we could maybe make life a bit easier for him until we get to see the vet.

Not sure why but our dog did do that same snorting choking thing for no apparent reason...and stopped doing it and hasn't done it in years. Not sure what brought it on...maybe pollen? It seemed like asthma to me when our dog was having some issues. But all I did was rub his throat to calm him down and make sure he had a bowl of water handy.

It is obviously a respiratory problem but the only way to figure out is probably to get scoped. In short, vet.

My cat had these same symptoms, started choking/huffing occasionally. Found out his lungs were getting filled with fluid due to some type of allergy/respiratory condition.

Now he has to have a shot every month for the rest of his life or else he will drown from fluid buildup in his lungs.

Almost all dogs get that, sort of a respiratory attack. Try getting it dewormed.

I dont see why this had to be closed, but its in the dogs best interest for its owner to take it to a vet, and not ask on a techie help site. water cooling it aint gunna make it go any faser.

On that note, taking health related advice, even for animals, from a technology website is extremely risky business. I generally close health and psychiatric related threads for humans.

You love your pet, go get real advice from people who know what they're talking about *Uses Jedi mind trick and waves hand*

There are too many variables that can cause respitory trouble in a dog. It could be a simple allergy or something like congestive heart failure.

Take him to a vet if you value his companionship and want him around for awhile longer.

Honestly man it sounds like heart worms. Have you had him checked?

Quote:
"However, active dogs and those with heavier infections may show the classic signs of heartworm disease. Early signs include a cough, especially on exercise and early exhaustion upon exercise. In the most advanced cases where many adult worms have built up in the heart without treatment, signs progress to severe weight loss, fainting, coughing up blood and, finally, congestive heart failure."
