So it seems I am not the only one with problems with Gigabyte 4870 1GB not being able to do crossfire. I am currently working with Gigabyte tech support to see if the problem can be resolved (be warned they are slow to respond). I highly doubt it's my motherboard or crossfire bridges as for my PSU, 750W is more than enough. User dankmn has the same Gigabyte 4870 1GB for crossfiring, so I see a trend here. So it's not drivers, not OS, not crossfire bridges, not the PSU, then the only thing left is the card itself. I'm thinking something is wrong with the cards when you install the drivers so they're not linking. But, I will update if Gigabyte can provide me with a working solution.

crossfire

:banghead:go to the ati web site and download from there. save and shutdown unhjook one card restare set bios to default, bootup, run ccc program, even if u dont see crossfire box leave alone, shut down insert other 4870 hook up both bridges, and reboot, remember u must have .net framework ,when ur computer logs on to windows let it set for a momment, the crossfire option should appear.
Ok, so here's what I did. I uninstalled CCC and all ATI drivers. I reboot in Safe Mode and removed the excess drivers with Driver Cleaner and DriverSweeper. I also cleaned my registry with JV16 Power Tools 2009. I reinstalled 8.542 drivers, it grayed out my Crossfire check box (I don't know why now). I didn't want to update the drivers because I'm afraid crossfire functionality would disappear, but instead I updated CCC and now this is what it gives me. I can still cross fire by checking the radio box in the menu that was added called Additive Graphics and checking the box "Combine to accelerate 3D game performance." I checked with GPUZ and it says crossfire is enabled "Enabled (2 GPU)."

The thing is, did you guys leave CCC alone and used an older CCC with a new driver? or you updated CCC and stayed with the old driver? I ended up with this new menu which I have never seen before. I'm thinking if I keep the old CCC and just update the drivers it might leave me my crossfire check box options. A clean fresh install of the latest 9.4 CCC & drivers break my crossfire check box in CCC. Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, I have already tried this. It doesn't work.

After long weeks of troubleshooting and working with Gigabyte tech-support I have finally found the answer. It wasn't the OS, it wasn't the PSU, it wasn't my motherboard's bios, and it wasn't the latest Catalyst drivers as I predicted. It was the videocards as I thought. Both of my cards use Qimonda memory (I believe the older versions used Hynix memory), I have no idea why they don't work together and there may have been bios problems when Gigabyte updated the bios from F21, F22, F23 which caused Crossfire from not working. The drivers contained on the disc may have been specially written for Crossfire to intially work. But as the newest Catalyst drivers rolled in Crossfire is broken because of the bios and drivers.

So the answer to this is, Gigabyte gave me a new F24 bios (which is currently not available on their site). I flashed both cards to the F24 bios and booted on my other XP Pro installation without moving the cards, without installing one at a time, without removing the Crossfire bridges. And as I booted up, PRESTO! CCC detects CrossfireX and opens up the dialog box to continue to setup CrossfireX. GPUZ detects Crossfire for 9.5 Catalyst drivers. I don't have RBE but this could be a modified F23 bios. I only suggest flashing if you are having problems like I did, otherwise I don't know what adverse affects it would have on your system.
