X800XTPE to X850XTPE?

Hi, I have an XTPE modded x800pro vivo and I was wondering if it was possible to flsh it with an X850XTPE bios? My card is good for 681/636, so it can handle the higher clocks. I was just wondering if the bios would enable any latent features in my card?

Any thoughts are appreciated, if I'm being daft, tell me. I realise I'm talking about flashing an AGP card with a PCI-E cards bios, but I have seen people do it the other way, so I don't know.

I'm pretty damn sure that the X800 uses a different chip to the X850, meaning that this would definitely not work.

However - does anybody know of an X850 Pro being flashed to an X850 XT PE? Or even if the X850 Pro exists outside of my head?

Dan

(Btw, 681/636 seems pretty ridiculously high, as some Pros seemingly can't even run at XT PE speeds. How on earth are you managing to achieve this?)

What kind of cooling are you using? I think you should just leave your card where it is. Reason I say that is you've seen the benches between the X800XT PE vs. the X850XT PE, the X850 is just slightly faster.

Afaik the Chip in the X850 is a revised core based on the R420 (X800), rather like the R350/R360 cores used in the 9800/9800pro and the 9800XT. So I was hoping the same would be true for the X800 cards, if I had a PCI card lying around I would have tried it already.

681/636 is fairly high I know, it's on a water cooling and I used the pencil mods as decribed here. I reckon I can still get some more from the ram if I give the VDD and VDDq a little bit more. But I need to get other things done first.

btw, 681/636 in action, coupled to an FX-55 at 3.1 Ghz, as far as I know it is the worlds highest scoring purely water cooled score in '01:

Because every little helps ;) I'm going to be testing some Twinmos speed premium at high HTT once I get the +3.3vio mod done to the Vdimm.

The Vgpu is at 1.9v, I bench with the rig sat on the window sill with the window open ands the side of the case off. The trick is to let the Vid card cool down for a few minutes before attempting Nature as it can get as high at 35 degrees on the temp sensor. I have the VDD at 2.08v and the Vddq at 2.1v and the rams are sinked. I think I still have some headroom with VDD and VDDQ. :)

When it comes to gaming though, I leave the card at stock speeds. I can get the core a little higher but 681/636 seems to be a sweet spot for frame-rates. I can also raise the ram speed as high as 642 in some tests but it seems to have little benefit and can artifact in some tests at that speed.

It's my first stab at water cooling, here is the page of a thread at XR where I posted pictures of the system:

I can show you my last 3D03 run which wa pretty conservative. I haven't benched 05 for a while though, largely because I hate it! :p

Like I say, I didn't push it too hard for that score. I reckon I could get 16.5K at a push.

LOL that is almost as fast as SLI using 6800 Ultras...

How what a rought average ghz of how much you can OC ram before it starts to artifact.

And which is better to OC ram or GPU?

Thanks the compliments, it is the best looking set-up I've ever had but I'm still hoping that someone can enlighten me on my bios question :)

lol, let me think about that one! Like I say, I'd give it a bash myself if I had a PCI gfx card handy.

The Ram speed is weird in that some tests are clean and some can givle little triangles. I re-did the VDD and VDDQ mods this evening (2.24 and 2.29v respectivley and can now run the ram clean reliably in all tests at 645)

The core is a different story, it is clean at any speed untill a few seconds before you realise you've gone too far when you can get flashes of large rectangles or triangles of the screen vanishing.

It is always better to try to overclock both the GPU and ram together, if the ram is too slow, your GPU will be starved of data at higher speeds which will reduce the benefit of a higher core speed. You need fast ram to go with it to feed the fire. Another thing with ATi cards at least is that I've found that you can get certain "sweet spots" where the Ram speed and GPU speed work together well. There is no science I can find to this, the only rule of thumb I use is to keep the core and ram speeds to the same decimal place when overclocking with ATi tool.

Flash that x800XT-PE with a PCIe bios and all you wind up with is instant scrap for the trash can.

Hey GazC, dont even try it. I already ruined a perfectly good x800pro vivo trying it. No board will boot now with the card in it. I have a mx4000 pci card in and i still cant boot, only with the card out. Im pretty bumbed out but someone had to try it right?

heheeh i can join in here also

:)

can anyone offer any help in modding a x850xt bios? I want to flash my x800xl but at the moment the core wont handle anything more that 470mhz before hardlocking. Default voltages but under my waterblock

mong
