* Today's not a 'wasted day' as I apparently have picked up a NEW THING in this analysis of yours...

(I.E.-> I had NO idea that HD Tach could indicate the need for defragmentation of disks via its pattern of data on its graphs...)

neither had i alec but its a brand new just formatted and empty HD.. so i recon we can forget a cure as simple as that.. he he..

something wrong with the bugger thow.. the read seems to be the problem HD Tach apart stuff seems to write to it okay but not from it..

i only used the benchmark in my attempts to find out why its iffy..

soo defrags apart what can make a HD behave like this.. he he

my other three are perfectly okay.. even the ones that might need a little defrag.. he he

i have checked everything out it might just be a duff drive..

I'm now wondering if TCQ or NCQ (I don't think this model of RAPTOR has that latter one though, but, iirc, it DOES have the former one) is turned on?

P.S.=> It can affect things, but I honestly NEVER knew how to turn those features on OR off on these disks to be blunt about it... jumpering maybe? apk

its has the latter one same as the new 150 drives.. same 16 meg cache as well.. i did look at mine and didnt see any jumpers anywhere.. its the GD on the end that denotes the older ones..

i did read that command line queuing or whatever its called has a negative impact for single user set ups and should be turned off.. ..

but as u say i aint found any way to turn on or off such things..

ps.. the average read time given is way off as well.. its worse in reality then the HD benchmark suggests.. it seems to spend a lot of its time doing nothing with little bursts of activety in between.. lets say its at least 10 x slower then it should be.. he he.. the average read figures are when it is reading not counting the time in between spent doing bugger all.. he he.. in short its painfull to watch..

Ahhh, I see... you have one of the "latest/greatest" NEW edition 36gb RAPTORS then... I myself still have the "original edition" here (8mb buffer type).

You MAY have a "lemon" there, they DO happen. I don't know what to tell you, other than IF you bought it new, this would be grounds for exchange imo @ least... & if used? Well...

thats at the top of my probability list alec.. but its said that most hardware sent back has nothing wrong with it.. my own experience backs this up..

but i think it was a mistake anyways so if it does go back its a credit note i would be after..

i have dropped the prob on one other storage based forum so an answer might pop up.. he he.. why do i doubt it thow.. he he he
