Not criticisms, just thoughts:

1./ Memory chips could be on BOTH sides, therefore there could be 8, 12 or 16 memory chips.
2./ IHS could mean your sizing is wrong

when your looking at the memory chips on a video card, you look at the chips ontop only to figure out something about the card, there could be 16 chips but in just about every case the chips on the back are linked to the ones ontop which means there only for more memory, and won't affect rops, or the ring bus.

if it were 512bit there would be 16 memory pieces ontop,

but since its only 8 then it means this card is not 512bit its, 256bit, with 16 or 32 rops just like largon said.

Thats usually what most top end cards come out at, but that would be for the dual GPU card, I would think somewhere between $250 - $300 (thats if they keep the trend charging you guys the same number as us over here). And that kind of price range you would most likely be looking at a 5870 (if thats the name they go with), something like a 5850 would hopefully be $200 - $250. Then the midranged cards like a 5770 coming in probably around $150 - $175. All guessed, but I don't think those will be too far off.

Hmm well theoretically I may of just come across 175 pound for a card.

If there was 12 chips (384bit) I'm sure they would have put all of them on the same side, kinda like GTX260 rev.2 has all it's 14 on the front.

PS.
That tilted die eerily reminds me of R600...

I'm not too fussed really.

That doesn't do anything for us, because we know that neither Crossfire/SLI scales 100%, nor do GPUs actually run at 100% due to the CPUs involvement in the rendering.

We won't know until we actually test it, and that's the unfortunate bit. All these cards just keep making paper promises, but their value is not universal, nor is it ever close to the hype.

Well I'm running an HD4850 on a Phenom 9950 and in Crysis I hit 98% GPU usage(!).
With the Powercolor one at least, even the memory on that one doesn't go above 70 celcius when the fan is set to 100%.
The Asus EAH4850 however, can't even run frikkin' Oblivion or GRID or AC or...well anything that's launched after January 1 2008 without the memory going to 110 celcius and the PC crashing...

KILL ASUS!!!!!

OMG, I can't wait for Sept 10th. Not because of the revealing of the HD 5xxx series, but because of the reduced price of the HD 4xxx series, and the (hopefully) announced release date of the HD 5xxx series.

(I'm still running on old specs, I plan to upgrade in sept - dec time frame; I will have a new pc by 2010)
+
(Sept is turning out to be a nice month: Tokyo Game Show + Splinter Cell Conviction + HD 5xxx series)

Indeed. I'll probably buy another HD4850 at a very cheap store in Germany...
90 euro's for a 1gb version now...
Damn shame my mobo can only run pci-e 2 x8 when crossfire'd...
I'm going to buy a new PC when HD6xxx comes out for sure...

In what program would you be seeing memory temps?

i don`t think the HD48 series prices will be cut when HD5 hits the market . If Amd further reduces prices , most of the customers looking for a videocard won`t be that interested in HD5XXX if they can get a really good deal on the older GPU based videocard .
Oh and BTW : http://www.chiphell.com/2009/0820/99.html . Looks like a XFX HD4770 to me .... ofc. a bigger brother .

I think AMD will come out with the lower end model on 9-10 and wait a little bit for the big dog 5870 x2, which is in my sights.

AMD's best bets are going to be to release whatever they have as soon as possible and put out data on how well their new cards perform against whats out right now so they can steal some of nvidia's customers before nvidia's new cards start coming out

I sold my 4870 toxic for one these but I'm still gonna wait at least until Black Friday to order, plus I'm sure 30 days after the release we will see a 10% price reduction as always

New Pics on the GPU that was in the first article. Yay. Im hoping thats one of there Mid Range cards :/. What makes me think the specs we thought were about to be true but might not be true is that the card that i saw the pics of had mem chips on the back of the darn thing. More memory or what? Bigger Bit wide bus and some more buffer nikka's Kinda maid me confused but im still wanting to see some high end rapage :0.

I guess they are introducing the cards on September 10th on some USS aircraft carrier which is now a museum due to the week of military remembrance. So they will intro the line up and then soon to follow within the next 3 weeks from that I think reviews and previews will be out and I am hoping they will drop the cards on the market in time for Windows 7, around the end of October. But I would like some specs on the 10th of next month and I would hope they new x2 card is balls to the walls fast.

As for me I really care for the price. I mean, will they keep the price similar to that of the 4870 on release? This gives me a cold feeling that they will take the price farther. What a bunch of bastard then :p

hmm idk, i'm betting if AMD do a launch of just the HD 5870/50 then the HD 5870 will be $349 and then the HD5850 like 299. that leaves the HD 4890 some room to sell out the rest of their stock and keep their currents prices on the soon to be previous gen whereas if they released the HD 5870 $300 then the HD 5850 woulud probly be $249 or less, putting it in HD 4890 territory. Now i may be wrong cause if they do put the HD 5870 at $300 then that would mean HD 5850 around 250, which would force the HD 4890 some and so on. They would get less but that would put more pressure on nvidia as tehy would need to follow a lower in prices to compete or else they'd lose alot of sales by Q1. just my thoughts :p

They released the 4850 under $250 and that card was a killer at release, thats why I"m thinking they will stick with the same price for 5850. the 4890's are already around $180 - $200, they would go to $150 - $175, which gives them plenty room.

if they released the HD 5870 $300 then the HD 5850 woulud probly be $249 or less, putting it in HD 4890 territory.

Thats what I said :p 5870 $250 - $300, 5850 $200 - $250, that would cause no issues with the 4890's as they will drop in price for the new generation. They are already $180 - $200, they would drop a bit more to $150 - $175, giving them a nice price range to work in themselves. Or they might go $160 - $200 to give the 4870 a bit of room.

I'm pretty sure that this time, ATI is gonna cut the HD5850's performance big time over the HD5870, from all I have heard they will both have GDDR5, so now they will more than likely cut ROPS, shaders, or both.

That would be GPU-Z and Rivatuner...on my Powercolor HD4850 at least.
"MEMIO" is not memory.
It's a part of the GPU core.
