Wolfdale IHS removal?

I can't find anything juicy on the web about Wolfdale IHS removal, plenty of Conroe horror stories

Anyone here attempted that or a lap?

I wsh I had a flat lapidary... grind the IHS off slowely to expose the core.

The core won't make contact with the cooler if you take the IHS off. Do it, and you'll be left with a useless chip.

isn't that where inovation and custom cooling comes into play?

course i think most of us would probly end up applying too much pressure and damage the chip without its IHS.

Yep, you either have to modify the socket retention mechanism, or the cooler. The core is below the metal around the socket.

i broke an X2 once, because i tried to fit a 300g copper block on it. on the bare die. OW^^

Hmmm... that does pose a small challenge. I had a koolance shim on my previous build, about 1/8" or so thick to raise up the WB - the WB interfered with some of the power caps. Hard to tell if the shim raised the temps or not. I'm sure it didn't help.

Like I said, they had to modify the board. I also happen to know this from first hand experience on a delidded E4300. An apogee waterblock wouldn't make contact with the core because it hit the metal around the socket, even with the top plate removed.

180-190 typically.

Could you just keep lapping until you got to the core? Then take .0005 off the remaining edges of the ihs and you can still use the stock retention system.

Not unless you have a heatsink that fits down into the hole of the cpu hold down. The core is below the level of the metal surrounding the socket.

Ah you had mentioned that the core itself is below the bracket. And adding a spacer would put you right back where you started.
