How can I stop multi from dropping?

Yes all power saving, cstates, eist and junk is disabled. overspeed protection is disabled.

Multipler drops from 21 to 20 @ load using wprime or itb.

goes from 4000mhz to 3800mhz.

I think it might have something to do with thermal throttling but my temps are fine (low 60's at load with 1.3v core)

Is there a way to lock the multi at 21?

there should be a setting in bios under CPU settings for ratio... set the ratio to the value you want and it should lock it (this feature is on most socket 775 boards but admittedly I havent played with a X58 before)
chances are if you got all settings for speecdstep off in the bios it is throttling... what program are you using for cpu temperature?... realtemp? coretemp?

I assume that you are leaving EIST enabled to get the 21x multi? .... without it you will only have 20x. Thats the way it works on my board anyways..... "Turbo" enabled of course. Look at it this way "Enhanced Intel Speedstep technology" does not necessarily just drop the multi down to power save, it's needed to raise it also.

shevanel make sure you are on a high performance power setting in windows 'power options' too, balanced or power saver may contribute to the speed dropping.

as wolf says, there is a software and a hardware aspect to it.

disable power saving in the windows settings, and it may well prevent it from dropping.

I've had this setting be the only thing dropping my multi before, I scratched my head for a good while on that one

All c1 and cstates, eist all that stuff is disabled. power setting is and always is on high perf.

The multi drops from 21 to 20 whenever it loads.

With EIST enabled, it still drops from 21 to 20. with eist enabled it drops to 12x when idle as it should...

From what i have learned the turbo feature 20+1 multplier will idle and stay at 21x190 whenever the cpu is working, but if it goes to 100% the TDP goes past spec which is 130? and I think that causes some mobo's to drop from 21 to 20 for thermal protection, not tempature but WATTS i think?

i hear some board have a TD feature or something that can be turned on/off.

I'm not sure if the msi platinum sli has this feature and therfore I dont think I can prevent it from dropping to 20 from 21.

Unless you guys know something?

IIRC Turbo Mode is for accelerating single- and dual-thread programs. It's supposed to turn off when you load all 4 cores by default.

TDP throttling is the only thing I can think of that would cause this to happen now, on my P6T deluxe V2, on the latest bios I can actually turn EIST off, and manually lock 21x Multi, and though using intel Turbo V8 applet and loading the CPU a whole bunch its never dropped back to 20x from 21.....

I also thought it would drop back when loading the entire CPU, but it doesn't..... i7's really can be a bag of tricks when it comes to different mobo's and setups, each can react/set up/oc differently.

I think it is the TDP throttling too. Oh well.

Well at least it should happen unless stress testing, there ain't much in terms of apps and games that will load up a i7 and cause it to drop multi

Yes get a new motherboard. The MSI motherboards, unlike the rest don't support a full x21 turbo on all cores. Other boards do.

This chuckley-guy doesn't know what he's talking about. That's right... zen-laser-man is full of horse manuer. See the real single core single thread turbo is x22 on the i7 920, not x21. x21 is actually based on the power your cpu is drawing. If it goes over a specific wattage, it throttles, but motherboard manufacturers like ASUS, BIOSTAR, DFI, EVGA, ECS, Gigabyte, and the list goes on... don't have this problem. Why? MSI sucks? I don't know, but this hasn't been the first time this issue popped up on TPU.

Trust me. This is the last time I buy MSI products. I rma'd this board only for it to come back with the dimm1 still not registering any memory. I run dimm3/5 in dual. MSI wants me to 2nd RMA but I think I'm just going to pass, save for a new one and toss this in the trash... one day.

I did the same thing; I could figure out for the life of me why my CPU wouldn't come off the x6 multi. Bios tweaks and everything didn't work. Then I looked at the power settings in Vista and it was on Power Saver mode.
