Triple channel kit on P55 board
Right, so I can get a triple channel G.skill memory kit of a mate of mine for less than a dual channel kit for my new P55 based rig.
So the question I have is if I should install two of the 2GB sticks and run dual channel or rely on Intel's flex mode to take advantage of all 6GB? I can't seem to find any benchmarks on this for the P55 platform. Has anyone tried this? |

Do you an x64 operating system and do you do anything that requires more than 4 GiB? You need x64 to address 4+ GiB of RAM and there's no sense slowing two of the sticks down if you don't do anything that requires three.

Yes, got x64 OS and I do some HD video editing, but dunno how much difference the extra 2GB of RAM will do. I though the system wouldn't slow down much if you use flex mode, but I can't find any figures so hence why I asked here.

I've tried flex mode with set of ocz plats. They will run, but but it does cause some stability problems with higher ram speeds. I get much better performance out of 4GB in dual channel. Besides, I've never had all 4GB used for anything, let alone 6GB. I just keep the extra stick around in case one of my sticks ever fail.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, can you buy 3x dual channel P55 intended kits and use them in triple on a x58 board? P55 mem seems to be cheaper and more up to date.

use two sticks and keep the third as a backup in case one of them dies

Right, ok, well, never mind then
![]() Might go for a different kit in the end, as I found a good deal on s 2x2GB kit which will cost me less and comes with warranty... The only memory I've ever had fail on me was some DDR2 stuff from Cell Shock, so I'm not really concerned about keeping one stick "just in case". I'll put the money I save towards a better graphics card instead, as it's time to upgrade that as well... |
