ATI 5XXX Aftermarket Cooling

As of today there are no official Aftermarket cooling alternatives (as I know of) for HD5XXX but most of the old ones do fit the HD5XXX cards since HD5XXX:s have the same slots for the cooler.

I have got an Accelero S1 Rev2, which does actually fit the HD5850 with a little modification (had to turn/cut some fins to avoid them touching the DVI-connector). What I'm anxious about is VRM cooling. I have no proper heatsink or else for that.

Can i use Thermalright VRM-R1/R2 for HD5850?

I think I just saw one that listed a 5870/5850 as one of the supported cards.. it was a few days ago and I gotta look again..

I don't know about the TR VRM heatsink.. maybe email them or somebody else here would answer?

Buy some ram sinks, they'll be able to cool your VRMS.

Any heatsink on your vrms will work. Basically if the holes dont line up properly just use themral epoxy to attach the sink. - just make sure the metal is touching the VRM and you are set. Ramsinks, other VRM sinks, Pennies glued together using thermal epoxy - literally just about anything will work.

Actually thermalright do offically support the 5870/50 with their cooler.
Of course VRM sinks are required.

I'm still wrestling with the damn backplate on my 70' its just one of the 3 tiny screws on the end with the pci-e power, it just won't budge, and continually destroys the head of any screwdriver I take to it with. gaahhhhhhhh

have you tried spraying some wd40 on it?

Are your screw drivers made of chocolate? Ay screw driver I have will strip out a screw if it slips, if the heads on your screw drivers are turning, you might want to buy better screw drivers.

I'm pretty sure that an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 will handle it just fine. Throw a 120mm fan at it and it'll probably handle those 1GHz overclocks too.

It's a monster of a cooler, I bet it would even do CPUs.

I have 2x 120mm fans and VRM chips are still running VERY hot.

Just to make sure could someone please highlight the VRM-chips that need cooling:

VRM heatsinks bundled with S1 wont stick properly due to small area of contact.

I am not even sure if I'm trying to stick them on to right chips. That's why I asked you kindly to point out the VRM-chips (my last post contained a picture of HD5850).

VRM-R1 works wonders on my 4890. Too bad it won't fit a 58XX card.

Yo, guys, what do you think about Neo Vortexx?

Look at Akasa's website. I also have it installed on my 4870 1GB. It does a fine job at cooling the card. It's not the chilliest air solution, but it's quiet and also sufficiently cools the card--by FAR better than Sapphire's large 90mm fan cooler with 3 heatsinks.

This solution has 2 heatpipes that performs a bit like Sytrin KuFormula VF1 heatsink (one of the best from 2 years ago). It also has a copper base. The fan does not go too fast, and is at one fan speed, which is just quiet enough for optimal cooling without being heard. It did about 19 degrees better than Sapphire's large 3-heatpipe 90mm fan cooler, after taking ambient into account.

I bet my socks that it will cool a 5870 fine, if it can fit. If the VRM is not too tall, or far away enough from the GPU chip so that it does not interfere with the Neo Vortexx cooler, and the mounting holes are the same as the 4800 series, then splendid! It might perform just as good as 5870's stock cooler, and you do not have to crank the fan up to slightly audible levels. 5870's stock cooler is mighty fine also--perhaps better, but louder also if cranked up.

Another thing is that it's blue UV-reactive. It's mighty nice to the eyes, with copper internals.

yeah the heads of the screwdrivers seem to be made of pudding or something, the screw doesn't budge at all and putting a decent amount of pressure on doesn't help at all, the screwdriver eventually turns all by itself and then after about 1/4 turn its useless for that tiny screw anyway.

Accelero S1 rev.2 will fit perfectly on HD5870, no modification needed. I measured this precisely, but Accelero VRM heatsink won't. One capacitor is blocking upper fins and they must be bended or cut. It is slightly longer too and mounting holes don't fit. So decent aftermarket VRM cooler for HD5870 is badly needed and we are good to go with +1Ghz cooling solution!

Couple of days ago I removed the heatspreader from the original cooler and put it under the Accelero S1 rev2 and got my VRM temps to drop quite a bit

Had to modify S1 a bit (bend some of the fins) but other than that it fit just fine. That's a somewhat of solution to VRM cooling problems.

Still have to flash MSI bios since due to Asus bios MSI afterburner changes idle volts, not the 3D volts. I assume there isn't any other program that can change HD5850:s volts.

Hey, I haven't really looked but am wondering if any of you could provide a quick image of the heatspreader to show how tall it is. Better yet, provide a mini-guide on fitting an Accelero onto a 5870?
