upgrading from 8800gt to 4890!
Just took the plunge on a HIS 4890. Upgrading from a Sapphire 8800gt that has perfomed well and is still kicking fine(may use it for physx or backup) I know my old s939 opty is gonna bottleneck it but am thinking of the future when I can update my whole system. She still runs good and am excited to see what this HIS card has to offer. Probably be here weds from the egg. Plan on clocking the crap out of it!

Thx d3! What prompted the purchase was my new ASUS 23" 1080 monitor! I really wanted a 5850 but the deal on 4890 was to hard to say no to, and it's damn hard to find a 5850 right now! I used to have an x800gto (died) and still have an x1950pro (both modded) that performed well so kinda wanted to get back in the ATI camp.

Yeah, Sapphire only makes ATI cards. Zotac makes NVIDIA cards (both companies are owned by PC Partner). PNY would be the brand of his 8800 GT.

In preparation for my 5850 purchase, I just sold my PowerColor 4890 PCS+ to a friend with a ... I think 965 or slightly higher level chipset board, Q6600, 4x2GB DDR2-800. His former card was a 8800GT, but the boost in performance that the 4890 gave him was far below what he thought it'd be.
Why's that you ask? I believe it's that his board is a major bottleneck, the PCIe 1.1 to be exact. In my system I got about 95-110 fps (105 average) in GRID maxed out @ 1920x1200, but he only got about 55-70 fps (58 average) in GRID maxed out @ 1920x1080. What tells me that the PCIe is to blame, is because my former system was the E8500, 2x2GB DDR2-800 & MSI P45-8D (with PCIe 2.0), and at 1920x1080, GRID gave me about 75 fps average. Now not that all my specs were below my friend's, only that the P45 chipset on my mobo supported PCIe 2.0. So, I highly advise that you get a PCIe 2.0 supporting mobo to really enjoy your 4890. ![]() Hope that helps...

From what I know, the GRAM is fairly tight to OC, but the core hits 1GHz fairly easy with CCC (for me) and mine was already OC'd to 950MHz. They're made to rival the GTX275, but mine at 950MHz was on par with a GTX285!

i dont think pcie 2 or 1 would be the reason for a drop in performance, clock for clock i can get higher fps and bench scores in my p35 board vs my p45 board with all other things being the same.
tbh i think the p35 just has more agressive latencies on the nb/mch than the p45 but the pcie slot dont make any difference, might do with a dual gpu card but not a 1 gpu card. what are the clock speeds of his q66 and your 8500? as the ego engine doesnt scale well and mhz wins over cores with that one.

Remember alot of the old games hardly uses more than 1 core, so if the Q6600 is @stock it can affect the 4890's performance. Its a 3Ghz Dual vs a 2.66Ghz quad @stock here, if the game don't use more than 2 cores, the E8400 always comes out on top.

I have the XFX Radeon 4890 the highest stable i got it to was 930MHz core and 1100Mhz Memory.
After that it artifacts like crazy. It gets very hot.. I am pretty sure either way your not going to get 100% of the card with the motherboard and cpu. Hell i had a Phenom 9850 before the one i have now and that was holding my card back... |
