You are probably right, but I just prefer PSUs with 12/14cm fans.

Well, some of those 12cm fans just hardly moves any air.
They are more on the side of cosmetic than functional.
8cm fans on properly made PSU have done their job fine for ages, I simply won't choose a PSU becasue I like the fan.

Anywhom, I use to buy budget PSU's, I tend to buy better ones these days but I still try non branded every now and then, a bought a cheap ebuyer 700w one ( not good for anything but the most basic system) but it's heavy and does have a fair amount of components in it.

As a general rule I would half the rated wattage on cheap PSU's.

Doesn't leave you with much wattage after wards, so your the cheaper ones will be quite strained all the time, hence all these horror stories about stuff blowing up.

That's a very solid PSU. However, as others have mentioned, you could find a corsair tx750 or 850 cheaper.

Some maybe, but I thought that we're talking about real PSUs in here, not those like Codegen.
In a good, well designed PSU the 12/14cm fan does a great job and moves as much air as it should. Don't know about you, but I'm not taking any other under consideration.

Yes, the 8cm fans on properly made PSU have done their job for ages, but ages ago there wasn't so much 1kW PSUs out there. And I don't think that manufacturers like Enermax, OCZ, Be quiet!, Seasonic, etc are making their top notch PSUs with bigger fans just because of cosmetics.

And finally - I just like PSUs with bigger fans because I CAN.

mate!

pantherx12 - I still envy you that PSU lol I'll talk with my mate in UK, but he lives in Dundee...

I mailed AMD about it about a month ago because I was curious myself and my question was almost identical to yours.

Here is the answer from AMD.

Quote:
We can only speculate at this point. If the 5870 requires a minimum of 500watts to run a single card configuration and 600watts mininum for 2 cards configuration than a 700watt PSU should be sufficient to run a 5870X2.

Until the actual system requirements are officially released, this is the only information we have.

Now thats what i call a power supply.
