computer freezing??

Ok, I tried myself to figure this one out with no luck so far. My computer keeps freezing out of no where on me. Doesn't matter time, temp., etc. It will freeze. By freeze I mean I can be on the internet, gaming, or it could be just sitting here with no one on it and if the screen has gone off it doesn't come back on or if you are using it everything just stops. The picture is still there but mouse, keyboard etc. nothing works. Lights are on computer is running temps are fine. I've ran AdAware, Spybot SD, AVG is always running, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, CCleaner, Driver cleaner and this is on a new OS (windows XP Pro). Can't find anything. Bios setting havent been changed other than to turn on Sata.

Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 "E" 3.2GHz stock (cleaned with new Thermal Compound) (42C)
MSI 865PE Neo2 P (Platinum Edition) Latest Bios (clean, nothing abnormal on board)
2x1GB Patriot Signiture Series DDR400 (stock speed) Memtest86 tested with 6 passes (5hrs)
Western Digital 500GB SATAII HDD (jumpered to 150mbs) (unjumpered 350mbs) no difference
XFX GeForce 6600GT 256MB AGP with Zalman HSF (temp @ 30c)
Pioneer DVD-RW SATA
Antec Basiq 550W Plus ATX PSU (NEW)
New SATA cables
Thermaltake XaserII Case (5x80mm Case fans) 2 plugged into MB , 3 into PSU
1xNB Fan plugged into NB fan connector , NB HS just cleaned with new thermal compound
Zalman CPU HSF plugged into CPU Fan connector
Onboard sound, LAN
Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse plugged in via PS2 ports (tried removing all USB devices) no difference
SOYO 22" Monitor
New TRIPP-LITE Surge Protector

So you reinstalled the OS and everything?, also try reinstalling your drivers.

Did you recently change anything on the system, hardware or software wise?

I did a clean install of Windows and all drivers are up to date. I did the clean install to see if any of the programs that were on it might have been the cause but it still just freezes. Could it possibly be the video card going bad causing the screen to freeze? The HDD light will still blink etc as if the computer is still running but I cannot move anything on the screen. I ran driver cleaner and wiped all video drivers and re-installed them but still the same thing.

Sounds like the HDD, but thats only speculation. If it was a Graphics card you would get signs like artifacts or a driver crash/BSOD

Swap the HDD out for a fresh one and see if that does the job.

It's probably something with the hardware then. If you can, try and use other parts and see if the system still freezes.

Look over your motherboard with a light in the PWN area for bulging or burst caps

I did that yesterday. Looked over the entire thing. The MB is in excellent physical condition. Wondering if it's not a CPU, MB problem. Only things left ? No sooner was I done with the HDD test I let it sit for about 1/2 hour and my son got on it and jumped on the internet and it locked up. ? . But it ran the HDD test for 3hrs and didn't lock up.

Did you run mem-test? Swap modules? Try one then the other? Do you have a logging digital scope? lol

LOGGING DIGITAL SCOPE??

Did run memtest for 5hrs (6 passes)

I've tried each module on it's own with still no luck. Sucks that DDR400 is so damn expensive or I would buy a few new sticks. Can't find P4 CPU's either. It's just a basic PC that I use for a small amount of gaming , internet, Photo's, etc. Son keeps telling me to buy a new one but I don't need all that stuff nor do I need to spend all sorts of money. But getting used parts is becoming a hassle too.

it locks up on me as well doing what ever. Could be using a program on the computer and it would lock up. Like now, it's been running for 11+ hours without a lock up. ??? It just locks up on it's own when it feels like it. Very frustrating to say the least.

I even have the BIOS set to "BIOS FACTORY DEFAULT" except I had to change P-ATA to S-ATA.

Could be your (new) Power Supply. After all you have done it is about the only thing left.

-FIX-
Replaced the Geforce 6600GT with a new card (Radeon HD4650 1GB AGP) and haven't (knocks on wood) had any lock up since. (sorry took so long to reply for a fix to this).

Regards,
Sweeper
