Please Help TechPowerup! defend against Hardware Canucks Forum!

If you have a 8-series or higher Nvidia GPU, you can help TechPowerUp!'s Folding @ Home Team. We are in a very heated points race with Hardware Canucks Forum. They have turned on the juice lately and will be overtaking us shortly if we do not rally our Points per Day(PPD). Our folding team is a dynamic group that has a great time competing among ourselves and with other teams, while helping to find cures for many common diseases. Please visit the Folding @ Home Section for more info. You can also PM me directly if you choose. Please consider helping TPU and all of Mankind as well!

There is very little data transferred when getting/sending work units.

I am not sure of the exact size of the file but it only takes ~5 seconds for each transfer on my 8meg line.

Very little. Each work unit is about ~.5 megabytes, maybe less. Assuming you get all 353 point work units (best for PPD, but uses the most bandwidth), you would be folding about 20 work units per day with each GPU. Therefore, you would be using up to about 20 megabytes of data (probably much less) per day. Multiplied by 30, you would be using 600 megabytes of bandwidth a month. Not much, and I'm probably overestimating the size of the WUs. If you would consider running the i5 for WCG, that way you could make the biggest impact in both projects. See my sig for WCG-related info (Ion's WCG Essentials Thread)

I'll answer because I used to have 9600GSO SLI:
PPD: about 4,000 per card, slightly overclocked
Electricity Usage: About 65w per card, slightly overclocked

About the best PPD/W and PPD/$ there is (I picked them up for $40 each)

Nope, it downloads the work unit, computes it, then repacks it and sends it back

My bad, I forgot to post in the ATI forums. 48790's can fold as well, but Stanford/ATI are waiting for the GPU3 core that harnesses Open CL to see a real points per day(ppd) increase.

Quote:
3) GPU3: Next generation GPU core, based on OpenMM. We have been making major advances in GPU simulation, with the key advances going into OpenMM, our open library for molecular simulation. OpenMM started with our GPU2 code as a base, but has really flourished since then. Thus, we have rewritten our GPU core to use OpenMM and we have been testing that recently as well. It is designed to be completely backward compatible, but should make simulations much more stable on the GPU as well as add new science features. A key next step for OpenMM is OpenCL support, which should allow much more efficient use of new ATI GPUs and beyond.

Just started, but I can't get both GPUs working together.
looks like it requires a connection in order to get the second card to work, but I have an exhaust fan on the back of expansion slot , which blocked the way.

Yeah I read that, it requires a connection, which is impossible since I have a exhaust fan at the back of expansion slots >,<

I would delete all installs and start fresh. It would be best to dump the System Tray Client and download the Console Client. There is no viewer to bog down the card(s). Make sure desktops are extended and GPU flags are set. i do not have too much experience with Win 7. Let me know if need help with that.

I will add my card to the mix as much as I can. I will see about getting my roommates in this too.

If I can that will be two GTX 260 OCed, one HD 4770, and one HD 4850. Without them I still have my GTX 260 and 4770.

Thanks for the info, finally got both cards running!!
I find QPI frequency (or uncore) plays a huge rule for CPU folding.
with 207x18, i5@ 3726mhz ram 1656mhz I was pulling 2.8K ppd but with 175x21 CPU 3675mhz and ram 1750mhz it dropped to 2.62K. gonna tweak a bit more later.

BTW, is it true for GPU's that only shader frequency affects performance?. If so I will just downclock the core and memory to make temps lower a bit.
