VS.

Ok, I have looked around and with going CF and only air cooling my cards I figured the top card should have better than stock cooling. I have been trying to find a difference in the 2 cards with these coolers. FYI 5770 series cards.

Is there any difference in the cards or is it all about the look?

anyone have experience with either card or even both cards?

thoughts?

lol, thats like asking whats better a Red Ferrari or a yellow one.. (they both are excellent)

I think in the reviews here the Vapor X one OCd a bit higher..I liked the Hawk one because of the larger exhaust port (but I LOVE the Vapor X cooler too)

The main prob is the nuttso prices..

The cooler is alum fins with a copper core (like the cooler on Intel CPUs)

I had a set of ref XFX 5770s so it will be interesting to see if there is a difference.(for real, not just some crap someone printed on the box)

Im gonna lap the cooler and use MX2 as well as oen up the exhaust once I get going.

(I really lucked out on the Openbox one, the one I got was full retail and even has Alone in the Dark game, its not like I will play it just cool when I get retail stuff for open box prices)

Openbox supposedly comes in a plain brown box with no accessories and only a 30 day guarantee. I still prefer to buy 90% of my stuff that way because
1- I usually mod the hell out of the parts so I couldnt RMA them anyways
2- Its EXTREMELY rare in my experience that parts fail.. either they show up DOA or they last a long time (if I beat up on the parts I wouldnt RMA them anyways)
3- Im cheap and love the discount
4- a bunch of times I get full retail stuff for the OB price(like this GPU) however when I bought my Crosshair III it came in a plain brown box with not 1 accessory..

and to be honest others havent been as lucky as me with getting Retail Versions in Openbox (I dont know if Newegg is just being nice to me) But as long as there is a good enough difference its worth it.
The retail price of the 5770 was $169 and I got it for $123.99 so it was worth the chance. If it was like 10-$20 I may just buy the retail version.

The Crosshair III was $140 (about $60 off)

well and there really isnt much you cant get with a open box of a gpu. the only thing you need is the gpu and maybe the crossfire bridge and thats it

Nice buy MK-
Didn't you just get rid of 2 5770's....

I have been looking at getting the same setup, you will have to post on how you like the Asus cards you got....

Dang the prices keep going up and up !!

I had a really good pair of ref XFX 5770s but I sold them to get 5830s.. But after seeing the 5830s I was a bit disgusted
(length of the 5870s and cost of 5850s but close in perf to the 5770???? Thats just stupid)

As it gets closer to Nvidia releasing their new cards ( think they are supposed to be $$$$) it looks like ATI is gonna raise all its prices to close the gap. So I got the best deal I could and am gonna force myself to be happy and not buy any more cards for a while...

One thing that surprised me was I had a 5750 to test out for the last week and it was a KICK ass deal ($100 OB). So if the cost of the 5770/5850 is a bit much check them out.

For sure, so back to 5770 eh-- Nice

I am interesting to see how they really perform over ref cards.
Keep us posted

Im lapping the copper block now, Il throw the first on in a few hours..

Ok compared to the XFX ref 5770s I had this is cooler by a few C. Crank the fan to 100% and its no where as loud as the ref fan at 100%.

Idle temps drop to the mid 30C range, gaming it is in the 50-60C range.(played Borderlands at max for a couple hours and never went over 55C)

I wish I had a Vapor X to compare it to.

So not worth getting one just for the cooler then really if its only a few c difference?

Also guys those temps are NOT good considering the heat out-put of the chips.

This is the heatsink its beating by a few degrees c

its 45x35x20 (mm)or so, its a tiny tiny thing !

You should be impressed by the gpu not the coolers XD

What MKs results tell me is that the CUcore cooler is an inefficient design, mostly for looks so people buy the product ;)

Getting 34 idle at the moment(960mhz on the core), ambient temperatures are around 18c just running a a game and see what temps I get in 5 minutes or so, will edit my post.

Okay and I get 70c under-load but considering I'm overclocked and using the tiny stock heatsink you can see where I'm coming from about the fancy cooler on the msi card?

you also need to take into account his ambient temp may not be 18C it may be 24C like mine is ....

that would mean his cooler is several C better than yours...

now we just need for MK to let us know what his ambient is ....

I keep my comp room at 69F and 20.55C

how is the overclocking on it...

I set it to 950/1350 so far and have been playing Borderlands..
(I tried 980/1400 but it crashed)

So not worth getting one just for the cooler then really if its only a few c difference?

Had I paid full price, but there is more to it than the cooler. When i took the Asus cooler off I noticed the card looked really nice (seems like there are a lot less things sticking up and in the way, the card looks like it was well designed to me)

when the second one gets here today I will post some picts.

As to ambient temps I try to keep my room at 20.5C

I have been a bit surprised as to the temps of the 57 series (my first thought was they would be lower) Im gonna water cool these 2 cards as I notice I have some Koolance stuff laying around and a 140mm rad as well. So I think these cards are perfectly suited for that.

Since my 965 runs at 4.05Ghz using a AC Freezer there is really no need to water cool that.

Here are a few shots of the Asus CU
first I like the full exhaust slot

here is the copper core cooler

The finish isant that nice, it was turned on a Lathe and has circle grooves in it

Here is what I like about the card

Not much in the way of hoses for water cooling

Here is a shot of the Vapor X card with card removed from W1zzards review

To me the Asus is a MUCH cleaner designed card..
