Here's my choice:

AMD64 "Winchester" 90nm Skt939 CPU
DFI LANPARTY nF3 Ultra-D

or

P4 Prescott 3.0Ghz
Asus P4C800

I really want the Intel, I don't know why... it's just a thing I have at the moment :p Which one would be better for general Office (school) use, and moderate gaming? Until Dual core athlons come out... I know 939 will be used for Dual cores... but, Well, will I be making a big mistake if I get the intel CPU?

Both would be more than adequate for school and gameage. I'd go with the AMD given the 1GHz Hypertransport bus that the NForce3 chipset offers.

I would go with the AMD64, but what rating are you planning to get? 3200+?

I don't know what ratings the 90nm chip has... so I couldn't specify, probably a fairly low one, so I could OC it to a higher one or above :p

Ahh yes, that is a point. Oh well, what do you think will be a better investment while waiting for the "Toledo" dual core?

Pablofrogo... not too sure about the AMD other than I know the MOBOs have agp/pci lock issues... I recently got a 3.0e on a P4p800-E and ocing to 3.75. It can go higher but my HyperX PC3200 dies at 466mhz 1:1 and at 5:4 the CPU just runs a little to hot for me at 3.8... Unless your going with a 3500+ or higher I'd do the 3.0e. There's a big price difference between the 939 chips and the Presscott 3.0e which has come down alot... mine was 209.00 dollars... wouldn't be a bad choice either way just how deep your pockets go ... :)

The amd 64 bit one is nice for gaming and office stuff but because it's all fairly new. I would go with the prescott :D

I think maybe in March (or sooner) I'll get the prescott.... 478 socket though, because of the DDR2 'n' PCIe card that I don't have, (read it again :p ) I plan to eventually go to dual core AMD, but I'll wait a while for price drops on dual cores, or just single core 90nm.
Right now I have PC-3200, I may try and sell it for £80 (US$150) and then buy some OCZ performance RAM, or EB RAM.

I want to get the FSB as high as possible... maybe umm, 300? :p That's why I'll get the lowest one I can find.

A P4e 2.8ghz,
Asus P4C800,
Aerocool Deep Impact 102
set-up will set me back £266.02 ($471.65)(Eur389.88)(2,897.89 Denmark Kron)

...you can get that RAM brand new from Newegg for ~US$150 - I know because that's where I got mine.

The main difference between the P4C800 and the P4P800 is that the P4C800 is an i875 board and the P4P800 is an i865 board.

So basically the P4C800 should be better, then again i only own a P4P800 which is great, can't say i heard anything bad about it's big brother though

I found a better solution, this. I means I can get LGA775, and keep my RAM (for a while) and GFX card. :D It's also a pretty good board.

Yeah it's a pretty fine board no props so far :D
But no i don have a prescott (actually i hate for the fact they run to hot :p So i only have a northwood :D )
I never tested or seen the C800 in action so i can't judge that. I just like the P800 very much for what i payed for it :D

AMD vs Intel?

Right off the top of my head I would pick the Intel P4 Prescott 3.0Ghz over the AMD.
1st Reason - on a notebook I have had issues with AMD getting stuck at 1/2 processor speed when on battery - the AMD Powernow had a few issues with windows power management. AMD released a new driver that seems to have resolved it however.
2nd Reason - AMD's do not support infrared.
In all honesty though - since AMD has updated their driver I would not hesitate in recommending them over the Intel when units are comparably priced. I never use infrared devices anyway.
But really, speed tests are not a true reflection of actual use - the difference in speed between an older pentium 2.0 and a modern 3.0Ghz is still measured in milliseconds... I can't even blink that fast! Yet the price is sometimes $100-500 more for the 3.0???
The harddrive(type and speed), motherboard, front side bus speed, cache and RAM (type and size) are way more crucial to consider when buying or building your unit. I've often wondered why consumers are so caught up in processor speed and will pay way more than they should for very little gain?
Here is another query for you to ponder - hyperthreading has certainly shown to be able to improve performance slightly - so why are manufacturers offering HT on units with windowsXP-Home when Home doesn't have the ability to properly utilize hyperthreading as well as win2000 or XP-pro??

Intel/AMD ... personally i prefer intel, but if i'd be buying something >now< it would be hard to take intel ... AMDs are allready with 64-bit; they use less power than intel ...
but i'm not buying nothing (2'4 GHz's good 4 now) & in a year there will probably be something new out:
from guru3d

The power consumption of Intel’s 65-nm single-core Cedar Mill processors is likely to be around 65W, down from the around 115W of the current Prescott CPUs, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers who have seen Intel’s CPU roadmap. The Cedar Mill is scheduled to be launched in early next year.

However, the power consumption of Intel’s 65-nm, dual-core Presler CPU, also to be launched in the first quarter of 2005, will still be at the same level as the dual-core Smithfield CPU, at around 130W, the sources said. The Smithfield CPU is slated for launch in the second quarter of this year.

The actual power consumption of the Presler will be known when Intel begins to deliver the samples of the dual-core CPU to its clients in the third quarter of this year, the sources said.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

one more Q:

INTEL Pentium 4 2.4A/533 1MB BOX
INTEL Pentium 4 650 3.4/800 2MB BOX LGA

what does this mean? 533 or 800 and 1mb or 2mb (Celeron have only 256 kb)
why is this important?
what is better; more imporatant to have 800 instead of 533, or would it be better to have 2mb instad of 1mb (533 + 2mb or 800 + 1mb  ) (& i know it's better to have 800 + 2mb :p )

& with this '2mb' is intel in front of AMD (still max with 1mb)
