Hi OC'ing experts,

I recently upgraded an old rig to an ATI6970 and QX9650 on an ASUS p45q-e. See linked

Just bought 6970, now is my CPU smoked.

Now I am trying to crank it up a bit, so far I have just played with CPU and am at 10x365 and running fine. 11x357 failed to boot. How can i get this baby unto 4g now :rockout:

NICE! cant wait to see your 4ghz!

should be easy on that chip! Lower your RAM speeds down to like 533 or 667 and then turn off ALL power saving junk like C1E and speed step, then change the multi up until it doesnt boot then change voltage by .05V

Also this may help as well

Hmm just ran an hour of OCCT on the 3.65ghz stock voltage and OCCT peaks at 68c. Somewhat hot..,I am aiming for for 64.5 as far as I know.

It seems that the programming I was using had a higher Tjunction than the actual 95* for the QX9650. Core temp reports around 5 digs lower than most others for the cores. Core temps hit around 60 degs under stress test loads after one hour. Seems fine for a push to the 4 gig club this week.

FWIW playing fallout 3 is significantly less demanding than the stress testers, Core temp rarely hits 53 digs through a long play session. This makes me more inclined to run the thing slightly hot under peak stress as it would rarely happen in reality and would give me max burst performance when required.

What would be reasonable near max core teems to keep in mind? I was thinking that 70 was hot, although I kinda plucked that out of my a$$.

My old 6600 was running 3.2 and would show warnings for heat during stress tests, ran fine for years and still runs fine. I radiator cooler will be my next toy, can only fit a single in my case though.

Also you could think of closed loop setups like a corsair H50 (H70 is over rated)

I have a H50 on my 1156 Xeon setup OCed to 4Ghz @ 1.4v and it doesnt get above 70 deg full load

Joking aside, anything in the region of 65-75 is acceptable based on distance to Tjmax.

Another question, is it generally better to have the highest stable FSB and lower multiplier? Would that give the best performance? My understanding is that a higher bus speed must be a good thing for performance. P5Q-e has plenty of heat sinks on it's bus, so I am keam to try to push it.

Oh dear, 1.33v and 4g met the blue screen of death whilst OCCT testing. I have not down tuned my memory yet, so i guess that will be something to try. Back to 3.67 at stock volts for now. Fun little session of pushing, more to follow. Thinking of a new cooler, but TBH at the moment, 3.67g and ATI 6970 murders everything, so no rush.

I had 4 ghz on my QX9650 but it began to degrade. I'd try to keep it under 1.35v in cpuz. The newer, non X models are more tolerant.

400x10 ought to be doable... 400FSB isn't really too much to ask for, and then you can run a 1:1 CPU/DRAM ratio and leave your RAM at 800MHz (maybe play with this ratio later when you get the CPU stable). I'm not sure what other settings may need changed to get to 400FSB... I ran into a wall on my E2160 with my evga 750i board past 300, couldn't get it stable, even with maxing out the FSB voltage and the NB voltage.

On 775, more FSB will yield more bandwidth over the FSB bus... should make things feel faster. On 1366/1156, FSB was replaced with a faster bus, so it doesn't matter so much.

Having done some research it seems like the megahalems air cooler achieves lower temps than the h50/ h70. What do people generally think about opting for the megahalems air with some kick ass fans as opposed to a similar priced h50 or h70?

Custom loop seems like a fun project for the end of the year, but for now, a cheaper interim cooler setup that my wife can keep when I upgrade.

Okay, no responses. I am pretty much sold on the megahalems cooler as that cost is small and the fans reuable in future. The question now is which fans and how many?

My case Antec P180 has top and rear exhaust by the CPU, so i have a number of options for push pull and exhuast.

What do people think?

Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1150RPM 120mm
Noctua NF-P12 Case fan 120mm or
Scythe Kaze Jyuni 1900RPM Slip Stream Fan

and how many?

Seems my Noctua NH-U12P cooled my i7 920 better than the megahelans did while being quieter. I haven't tried the GT on an air cooler, but they are great for rads.

I'd go for the megahalam, less possibility of failure when compared to a h50.

As for temps, under full load of all 4 cores, try to keep temps at or below 70'c. In real world use, you won't be running all four core at full load all the time. So if when at full load, as long as your cpus stays below 70'c, your cooling is adequate.

Cant really say which fans to use as I don't know whichs ones are the best, but I can say you need a fan on your case for pulling air into the case. If you only have fans blowing out of the case, you'll end up with negative pressure in your case, which will hamper your cooling.

The Noctua will not fit onto P45q MB so far as i can tell without removing a ram stick.

Okay, I have 2xfan bays for inwards blowing. I can fix something up there easy enough. TY

One thing i was wondering though:

Is it better to have excess push pressure over the CPU, i.e. 1600rpm and lower 1200rpm pull.

I believe people get the best results with even push/pull pressure, I could be wrong though. Someone else wanna chime in on this?
