Problems installing vista on SATA II

Ive recently upgraded to this motherboard:

and a core 2 duo 6420 CPU

the motherboard only has one ide connector and my HDD was going bad anyway so i decided to start fresh and got a 320GB SEAGATE Barracuda SATA II hard-drive

My problem is that when I try to install Vista on to the new HDD, Vista does not detect the disk and so i cannot partition and install the OS.

From this same partition screen there is an option to upload drivers, and my mobo came with a disk with vista drivers pre-installed. I tried uploading the SATA drivers from the disk, but unfortunately this fails to help.

I have enabled SATA in the bios and the motherboard seems to recognize the HDD, but i cant get Vista.

Any help is greatly appreciated

BTW, your provided link doesn't work. Could you please tell us the model of your Motherboard?

Wow, I haven't really hard of Vista having this issue, but It's definately an Xp based problem. Do you have your disk set in IDE/SATA (Raid)/ACHI mode?

my mobo model is: GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 1.3)

I have tried ACHI as well as IDE and vista wont recognize either setting. I havent tried using RAID as I only have one HDD

Well both ACHI and IDE should work fine, I use ACHI but I've never noticed a performance increase and HDTach reads the same speeds in both modes. How about your controller for IDE? Is it set properly in bios? I am assuming you're using an IDE/ATA DVD based drive. This is weird, I just haven't heard of this issue on Vista, I'll take a look around and see what I can find on it...in the meanwhile, go back through your BIOS, and just double/tripple check everything you've changed.

Found some stuff at help.lockergnome.org, but has a couple of settings in Bios you could change/verify to see if they help! Wish I had a DS3 to try and simulate your issue, but dammit my P5B does fine with an SATA2 HDD and ATA CD + DVD writer drive.

The first BIOS line under Integrated Perpherals probably says SATA
RAID/AHCI Mode. Set this wrong and all kinds of goofy things can
happen. Here's how I have mine right now and why. The default is IDE
mode. That's where I have mine. ONLY set this to AHCI (for SATA) if
your boot drive is a SATA drive. The problem is this presents a
chicken or egg kind of issue in that the only way to boot into AHCI
mode to support SATA is to have the drivers ALREADY present. Setting
this to IDE allows any SATA drive regardless which connector (orange
or purple) to run your SATA drive in IDE mode. It will be slower, but
that's all. It will work.

The second line SATA native mode, leave disabled. The third line
further down the page Onboard SATA/IDE device needs to be set to
enable. The forth line Ctrl Mode you can try either way.

Sadly, none of what I just wrote will help IF you are trying to
install Vista onto a SATA drive for some Gigabyte boards. Just to give
you an idea how convoluted the process is for my Gigabyte board if I
went the clean install route (which I didn't) they devote over a dozen
pages of what you're suppose to do to set it up in the manual, all
before you try to install Windows.

I do remember with my 'cuda 7200.9 when I first got it, I had Xp and I had to set the disc up using Seagate's utility because it wouldn't be read by an OS. You might wanna do an install on your IDE drive, set up the drive and try that also. And if you haven't already, remove the jumper on the back of the drive, it's really tiny and defaults the HDD to SATA 1. I noticed some performance improvement from pulling the jumper and allowing SATA 2 mode.

how about you go to gigabyte's website, or the sata's chipset manufacturers website and get the vista sata/raid drivers and make your floppy driver disk. God I love floppies.

Also, pull the jumper off the back of the drive and leave it off, I have the same drives btw..

You can use USB drives for that with Vista also, so if you don't have a floppy like me, that's the way to go!

i did remove the jumper. I tried making a bootable floppy disk and that did not work. vista wont read any drivers off of the floppy either. the motherboard came with a vista driver disk which i have tried to use during setup, but it does not help either.

do you have sata raid enabled? if so disable it if you are using a single drive.. do you have all the sata ports enabled in the bios? check the jumper setting on the HDD and all connections.

i have raid disabled. all of my sata ports are listed as ide in bios and i have all of them enabled. all the jumper on my hdd did was limit speed so i removed it. i will try to replace the sata cable but i doubt that will help as the one im using is new

Im having literally the exact same problem as you with the same mobo and HDD. I can get to the second step of installing Vista but it wont detect the harddrive!

Does your old IDE drive that's about dead have XP or an OS on it? If so, use it as your boot disc, and use Seagate's utility to configure the drive so an OS will recognize it. Like I said earlier, when I got my 'cuda 500gb 7200.9, it wouldn't recognize except for in BIOS until I ran the utility within XP, after that I've had no issues. Aside from that, do you have a USB Flash drive? Vista Install will recognize them, then you could copy your files to that. Floppy's are too flakey for modern day stuff it seems, I don't even have one, and never plan on having one again.

But if you can, try to boot your old drive with the new one installed, and run that utility, you can acquire it from Seagate's website.
