I just upgraded to 8800GT SLI on Thursday. Friday night, one card died and now i'm running one. The whole PC literally just shut down. Upon pulling everything out, I found it to be video card #1 the problem (i'm running on the EVGA 680i A1).

I'm now using a single KO GT by EVGA instead of two (while i RMA the first) and have found what I believe to be the issue - the AUTO FAN does not work. When you boot the PC the fan is high (unbearably) and once windows loads it drops off nice and quiet. Problem is, when going into 3d Games - it does NOT spin up. Having had one die, i've manually set the speed to high in ntune and its working a treat. Leaving it on auto results in a silent card - and a driver crash back to windows. I'm using Vista Ultimate 64 on EVGA 680i board, with the KO GT (was two). EVGA, you better do something quick, or your gonna have a shyteload of RMA on your hands. I'm tempted to RMA the second, I dont want to have to manually adjust to play a game the auto-to-manual fan speed. This should be common sense in this age? Comments please?

Yes i am using driver 169.04.

Apparently this fan problem is common. Many people who do not monitor their gpu temps might be reaching temps over 90 and not knowing. Sure Evga tech said that the card can work at temperatures beyond 100.... They are looking into the problem, and suggest that one adjusts the fan using rivatuner or ntune in the meantime...

I'm starting to worry, my evga 8800gt sc is due to arrive next week...

It really isn't that hard to set up the fan speeds manually. In fact, I prefer doing it over letting the fan speed be controlled automatically.

The reason I worry is that if I hadn't read that thread on the evga forum, it'd never have occurred to me that my new card would be overheating, until I fry it.
Also, it's uncool (no pun intended) for something not to be working as it should.

Use a utility like rivatuner and set fan fixed at 100% auto startup with Windows should solve the problem, if not then a 3rd party cooler would certainly lower the temps by quite a bit.

There is no issue with the fan. Like the 8800 GTX or GTS, the fan speed is constant. It runs at 100% of the preset speed all the time. In the case of 8800 GT, the low level setting of the fan is 29%. This may be a little low, but I have not seen any issues running the card at stock fan speeds, yet. I think they should have set it to 45% instead of 29% since both are equally silent.

Well... I dunno... :wtf:

"You'll notice that when the card is idling (desktop mode) it's roughly at 60 degrees C. The peak temperature when the product is utilized at 100% roughly 93 degrees C. Really, that's hot. So for that matter I'd have preferred the dual-slot cooler here. Another downside is that the residual heat is dumped into the PC. So this is truly one of the negatives on this product. That being said, the GPU can manage the thermals very well as it seems."

:twitch:

Come on. Can this really be true? I mean sometimes I play Oblivion for a 5 hour stretch, and there'd be that thing pumping out 93 degrees just under my cpu cooler?

Sounds like this winter I'd be heating my bedroom... with my pc... :ohwell:

On the other hand I prefer not to believe that part of the review. :( Or maybe Evga has better temperatures than Inno3D...

I run my stock 8800 GT at 700/2000 and it idles around 50C and loads to about 70C in a decent case with airflow. I think the flaw with the cards is not the cooler, GPU, or fan speed but the way the cooler is mounted. The default TIM is simply awful. It looks like a 5 year old mounted it. I cleaned this material off and used a proper amount of AS5 on the GPU core and shaved almost 10C off of the temps.
