What about this (price in UK £, but Im sure you could find the parts in $)

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - £175.95
MoBo: Asus A8N-SLi Premium nForce4 SLi - £99.95
RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200PT TwinX (2x1GB) - £114.95
PSU: Seasonic S12 600W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply - £87.95
GFX Card: BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-E) - £219.95
HDD: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 NCQ 160GB 6V160E0 SATA-II 8MB Cache - £42.50
Case: Thermaltake VB1000BWS Soprano SuperMidi Tower: Black - £42.95
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music - £64.95

Subtotal £849.15

VAT £148.61 (17.5%)

Total £997.76 :pimp:

Its under £1000 and it would eat those games your friend wants to play for breakfast :)

HookeyStreet, fuiop2000 needs that to be in CAD, If I remember correctly, 1000 pounds is about $2000 CAD (maybe more around in the low 1900's)

Look for a US Site and try to build a system for under $1200 USD (equivilant to $1500 CAD)

I just built the exact same PC on a US site and all I did to get it under $1500 was change the 7900GT to a 7800GT: Total $1410 but I suppose thats before TAX :(
