Step 1-getting ahold of your BIOS
Get a copy of your BIOS off of your VGA card, you can do this using ATiWinflash available here

To do so get ATiWinflash running select "Save"

Then save the BIOS as something simple like cardname_stock or oc_BIOS.rom

Step 2-Moding your BIOS
Now modify your BIOS thru RBE BIOS editor available here

Start by loading the image (load button is in the bottom left corner)

now you should have a screen like this:

notice how its has a checkmark in the box labeled pre-modified by RBE thats because i already modded this BIOS to 700/900 to do that select the "clock settings" tab

now if you want to improve your 3D clocks change the settings in the State 2 - mode 3 - "high 3D" column. Set this to your max stable clocks. Mine are currently 700/900 due to lack of power 2x3850s on a 500w Tt is a no go :ROTF:

if you want to adjust the volts and increase them for this card go to the voltages (still in the same column) now you want to set this to 1.327

Step 3-saving your BIOS
Now to save you will simply have to select save in the bottom left corner

To name it i recommend something like cardname_OC_clock speeds-volts.rom

Step 4-flashing your BIOS

To do this go back into AtiWinflash and select "load image"

select the BIOS you just modified, check to make sure the correct card is select and click program

once its done you will get this screen hit ok the click yes or no to restart

Step 5-repeat

repeat for as many cards as you have

does it show up as a 3870 on GPUZ etc or just clocked higher? I might have to do this on my 3850 :)

this is just a name change with clock increase?

How does the bios flash address the GDDR4 on the HD3870 vs. the GDDR3 on the HD3850's? and just FYI my ram speed on my HD3870 is 1125MHz!

There is a gigabyte 3870 with GDDR3 so a 3850 could in theory be flashed to a 70.

ok lets i phrased it 3970 "levels" meaning things like the vcores are now equal 1.327v on each which means without any physical mods you can clock up to a 3870

also GDDR3 has much tighter timings than the GDDR4 and someone here has a GDDR3 3870 and benched the 2 there was no difference even oc'd they were dead even

I wish you could increase the voltage on the memory on the 3850's though

and there are some 3850's that will hit 1125mhz on the mem with an overclock, they have memory rated at 1000mhz

but most have memory rated at 900mhz but can hit 1000mhz

I slightly agree, but your GDDR3 at max is as good as my GDDR4 at 1400MHZ(my max)?

BTW cdawall...im not trying to bash ya here, hell I was interested to say the least to stop here, as I own both...lol
Just the benches between the two, my HD3870 wins every time!

my cheap ATi OEMs did 770/1044 on stock volts but its to many watts for my PSU otherwise thats were i would run them so GDDR3@1044 the only way to know would be to have the timings off both cards

and do you really think that your 3850 has a chance when the 3870 is @ 1.5v

Any way I could oblige you with that info? Some sort of a bios dump maybe?

Also I was meaning stock with no core mod...I removed it as of late...no need really.

Is the HIS playing by the same rules, it is an OC'd version? I'll have to look at getting out my DMM.

By tomarrow I will have a run OC'd on her card (1024X768 tho), her screen is only a 15" for the time being.

I will see what she can do!

BTW got a measuring point for the 3850 Vcore?

should be same as 3870 it just depends on the card

mine came from nflesher

Nope not on the Blue HIS card...my HD3870 has a different layout.

BTW this is where i agree that the speeds are on par....

This is my Hd3870 with same core and stock ram.

But you do have to realize that without the Vmod I can do another 100MHz to my core and just a touch over 275MHz more on the ram! IIRC Im in the Open GL thread at well over 3600.

But I will see where her HD3850 goes...I know the core does mid 800's and the memory I dont think will actually pass at 1000MHz but I will see later!

EDIT:
I have clocked hers as far as 05 would allow, and I say, I have to agree here. As you can see I did end up with the same bandwidth....

That's a great walkthrough of the process by cdawall.

But for everyone considering doing this, remember that:

1./ 3850 is GDDR3, and 3870 is GDDR4
2./ GDDR3 consumes more power than GDDR4 and gets hotter

I can easily overclock my AGP 3850 to 850/1050 and higher. But I only do it for benchmarking and then dial back the clocks? Why?

Due to points 1 and 2 above, although you can be STABLE at higher clocks, you are pumping out a lot more heat than the little thing was designed for. Especially on the memory chips that has very flaky cooling on the 3850. You might be stable... put you will do a very slow bake on those memory chips and really reduce their lifetime.

UNLESS you get decent cooling on your GDDR3 chips (and check that EACH chip cooling is working properly... my 3850 Powercolor had those thermal sticky pads... some of the chips didnt even make contact with the heatsink)... then please dont run your GPUs at max max unless you are willing to shorten the half-life of the GPU.

My tip

1./ Benchmark to max overclock using stock cooler, write down the numbers C, M
2./ Replace the cooler with aftermarket
3./ Check the new cooler very carefully, esp, the memory
4./ Flash a new BIOS with C-10% and M-10% (always dial back your max overclocks in a BIOS setting). If you want to push a benchmark, you can always use RivaTuner to put them up to max max for testing purposes.

Well how about this, go into RBE and change the subvendor information to Gigabyte and then change video card to HD3870, change the gpu to 800 and the mem to 1000 and voltage to 1.32 and you have a gigabyte 3870 since it has DDR3
