Have a look at what else your comp is running. Like anti virus, messenger, spysweeper ect all running in the back ground. Turn everything you can off and see if it makes any difference.
Also I have a bench mark app which was getting low scores, ended up being somehow monitor had been set to 60 hertz, simply changing it up to 75 hertz made a huge difference.
Also what are the specs of your system and what vid drivers are you using?

And make sure you have "AI" in Catalyst Control centre turned off with 3D settings at performance, make sure yout BIOS Primary graphics adapter is set at PCI-E, sometimes it defaults to PCI, assuming it is PCI-E of course, if AGP check the settings.....fast writes, sideband addressing etc etc

Also.. 3dmark depends highly on the rest of your system.

Trying to run a x800xl with a crap CPU/ram/mobo will lower your scores.

make sure your 3d settings in the ccc thing are set to application preference and that vsinc is either off or application preference..

your 512 meg memory is wasted on that card.. not sure what an x800xl is exactly but if it has a low core/memory speed or only 12 pipes running your 4100 aint that far off...

That score sounds right if you are running stock speeds. List systems specs/settings for better answers.

The 800xl as actually quite a good card and has a good track record in overclocking, it is considered the flagship of the x800 range, here's an extract from a review:

The ATI Radeon X800XL PCI-Express has a lot of the features of its big brother the X850XT i.e. it has 16 Pixel Pipelines, 6 Vertex Shaders and 256 Bit memory. However, it is based on a 110nm process, has the RV430 core and does not require any additional power connectors. Although some makes do (usually with faster memory though). Also it cost a lot less than the X850XT.

And some specs@

Chipset - Radeon X800 PCIe Series
ASIC - R430
Pixel Pipelines - 16
Vertex Engines - 6
Transistor - 160M
Fill Rate - 6912MTexel/s
Memory Size (MB) - 256
Memory Type - GDDR3
RAMDAC (MHz) - 400 Dual
Engine CLK (MHz) – 400 (432 in Turbo mode)
Memory CLK (MHz) – 990 (1000 in Turbo mode)
Memory Interface (bit) - 256
Memory Bandwidth - 32.0GB/s
Max. Resolution - 2048x1536
Bus Interface - PCIe
VGA - Yes
2nd VGA – Yes

On stock speeds with a decent processor it should be achieving around 11000+ in 3D Mark 03 but at stock his 2005 scores are a bit lower than should be expected. With the usual tweaks/overclocking there is potential to hit 12000 in 03 and around 5800 in 2005 although I do not know what the stock cooling set up he has is. In the review I read its possible to get 450/510 according to them on half decent cooling so best he gets a grip and starts playin!!

That is far from the truth. First of all the XL isn't the flagship card. The XT are.

The XL has very poor overclocking abilities. While it is already a decent card, you just can't really push it any further.

The ram will overclock, but the cores are always poor.

Well thats as maybe's and I cannot argue with your valid points but I dont consider up to 50Mhz o/c on stock cooling particularily poor, depending on the quality of stock cooling of course and that will vary from manufacturer. The only actual difference between the 2 cards is the core clock speed which results in an improved pixel fill rate of 8 Gigapixels to 6.4 Gigapixels difference due to the increase core speed, all other hardware specs/functions are pretty much identical apart from the fact that the xt has SVideo & composite in. It is considered NOW the flagship because of availability, according to ATI themselves and stockists (can only speak for the UK specifically on the stockist side) the 800xt is pretty hard to come by whereas there are still big stocks of xl's available.

On top of all that, the x800xl's architecture is more modern than that of the 800xt and is actually based on the 850's R480 and it of course came out some time after the 800xt, in test comparisons it sits between the 6800GT and Ultra and in many tests actually beats the ultra. But as I said, you are right that at its time of release the x800xl was not the flagship, my error!

Isn't an X800XL equiped with the R430 core found on some X800GTO ? and with 2.0ns memory, by any chance?

Scores seem right on stock core/mem clocks.

You are correct, and as Big Boi said, there are big overclocks to be had on the memory but the core does not give as good results, IMHO tho there is good scope for core overclocking with the right cooling, the HIS version of the card with the ICEQ II cooling can add 75Mhz+ and that cant be bad which was at least part of my earlier point.

x800xl should be getting around 5500 in 3dmark 05 4100 is well below that.
he'll have to pos his system specs before we can help fix it though.

Under 100mhz overclock is crappy IMO. Most of the time it won't overclock but about 50mhz. Those cores should reach well above 500mhz.

But, still the point of this thread is that this guy isn't getting the scores he should. He needs to list his system specs.

Well, I had an X800XL and it was a great card for gaming but a horrible overclocker. And unless he is running a highly overclocked AMD64/Opteron rig, that score is probably about right.

Yeah, they don't overclock well, but still, 4100 is low for a 3DMark05 score. My XL, only 256mb, gets about 5100 with DEFAULT clocks, but when overclocked to 440 core/544 memory, with enhanced memory timings, I get about 5900 in 3DMark05. There must be something else about this kid's system that's slowing it down.

I think that x800xl 512Mb has only DDR2 memory and that could be the reson for low scores.

his scores are about right i think and by the way dude x800xl is the worst overclocker of the series....75 mhz best guess, and it does not have any architecture differences from an r420-423 lol. its only build on a 110nm process instead of a 130nm process without the low-k diamond insulation so it costs cheaper but dont overclock a bits worth, my gto with the r423 core unlocked to all 16 piplines and overclocked from 400 mhz to 520 easily and memory went from 492 to 560 mhz so that makes it a platinum. x800xl's simply are not made to go that far...scoring over 6400 in 3dmark05, plus i think his uses ddr2 mem

no x800xl uses ddr2 memory lol. it's all gddr3.
http://www.laptops4me.com/product_info.php/products_id/10005
line 3
as for the 3dmark scores.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1342063
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1001835
most are around 5K at stock.
4100 is 900pts lower.
so no it does not sound about right!
and none of you seem to know what an xl is! lol
400core 490(980) gddr3 256-bit mem 16 pixel pipelines r430 core.
and the 512mb has no difference s form the 256mb card other than amount of memory.

no xl uses ddr2 only gddr3, in fact only regular x800's and x800gt's (plus agp x800gto's) have ddr2, pro, xl's, xt's and xtpe's all have gddr3

I gave 2 examples on different processors one an intel dual core, one an amd 3200 939.

both resulted in around 5k.
and I said nothing about overclocking, i'm regarding stock speeds. and where is this dude? posts and leaves. lol
