I guess then I'll have to go for that 6200 if I want to pay electro bill! The 280 isn't far off from the 4870 and the 4850, power usage wise/performance wise, shows its a hell of a card to pickup!

Good guys at HardOCP remembered to put in the baseline (blue).

Wow, what a winner GTX 280 is on a performance/watt basis. All they need to do now is get the prices down some to make more competitive. What is the right price for the GTX 280?

I think it depends on how the 4870x2 performs. As it seems it will be a more powerful card, it probably needs to come down to at least $450 or so to make it a good buy imo. If they can get it down to $500 before the x2 is released they could have a short stint of having a worthy card.

Im a little disappointed. At pair of 4870s at load pulling 458 watts in not going to keep my computer room very warm in the winter.

A GPU that consumes 80W by itself at IDLE is ridiculous. Those GPU designers need to take a leaf out of VIA/Intel's book about power managemnt.

This is why hybrid SLI technology got me excited, it is supposedly be able to turn off the 3D card when in idle letting the integrated graphics do all the 2D/idle work. Needless to say this would lower idle power consuption by a healthy margin.

Not sure how it performs in real life, not too much write ups on the subject, and it works only with Nvidia chipset of course :mad:

We did some power draw tests on the GTX 280 cards in single and SLI mode on a QX9650 + 790i SLI setup. With single GTX 280 card, the system is drawing 147W at idle and 292.2W at peak and the 3DMark Vantage score is P10324. With GTX 280 SLI, the system is drawing 190.1W at idle and 508W at peak. The 3DMark Vantage score is P15813. Stay tuned for our full review in a few days time.

IIRC isn't the very high idle usage on the HD48XX caused by powerplay currently not working at a driver level?

The powerplay on HD48XX-series doesn't work properly yet. There are already HD4850-BIOSes with Idle clocks of 160/500 (original 500/sumthing), so I think the 8.7s or 8.8s will fix this problem.

The HD4850 was measured at 110W (this was the card alone) by Xbitlabs. The HD4870 draws about 40-45W more by the looks of it, so it'll probably top out at 155W+. That's not too bad, still a lot for a single GPU card. But at least it's less than the power hog, the 2900XT (which could get close to 200W for the card alone).
