It appears my luck with "TheMailBox" is finally changing. I downloaded the a new bios for my board and it added an option "EC Firmware". It had two settings, Normal and Special. I turned it on "Special" and activate the AAC to auto. Rebooted and BAM! 4 CORES! I'm about to run OCCT to see if I'm stable but if I am Ill be at 3.5Ghz with 4 cores!

What would be a better setup?

CPU: 3.40Ghz w/4 cores
Ram: 1066MHz

or

CPU: 3.49Ghz w/4 cores
Ram: 990MHz

Option 1: 200 FSB
Option 2: 230 FSB

Timings are the same. 5-5-5-12

Take option 2. Faster ram does help but can be a very minimal increase. Both options though should in theory perform the same.

I'll pick the first one. Faster memory will speed up better than higher clock speed in this case.

The "AMD uses faulty dice for X3 and X2" argument is increasingly becoming a myth. If AMD is seeing a good demand for the X3/X2 chips, it uses normal Deneb dice. Think about it. X3/X2 outsell X4. Why would a majority of AMD's dice have manufacturing defects?

Option 2: As said faster RAM won't make much to any of a difference. So might as well go for the faster CPU clock.

But again as JR said, those two setups will pretty much perform identically.

so since your cpu was a black edition CPU-Z recognizes it as a 940 now with the 4th core? awesome haha u just got a free upgrade. Though does it unlock the extra l3 cache with the 4th core?

The L3 cache doesn't need to be unlocked the full 6 MB is available to Phenom II X3 720. All cache associated with that core (128 KB L1 and 512 KB L2) is what is unlocked because it's part of the core.

That is the pin-count of socket AM2/AM2+. You'll see that on the CPU-Z shot of every AM2(+) processor.

huh didn't know that. that's kinda surprising i mean almost all intels cpu's up till now were lga775 but cpuz would the show the difference, wonder why whoever makes cpu-z didn't make the app able to differentiate between AM+ cpus.

Not all of the ones have defects. Where there is an X4 with a defect, they disable to offending portion and add it the stock of X3's and X2's. We are not saying every single chip is this way, most of them are just crippled on purpose to provide those processors in the first place. Basically they always try to build a 955, but when they fail, AMD gives the CPU a pat on the head, new name, and new friends to hang out with.

This practice saves them money on defects that do occur and why some people can't unlock the disabled cores.

I honestly thing the Auto tune calibration is a marketing ploy. Like AMD saying, "hey, its cheap, performs great compared against Intel in the same price, and......you might even get a free upgrade with some work".

I'd take the 990mhz and see if you can tighten up the timings a bit. Also try getting your north bridge to 2600 - 2800mhz as it will improve RAM performance as well.
