OS before hardware?!

I was wondering if I have an old HDD with windows xp installed on it, would it work with a new PC. Or would it result in some kind of error?

It is possible, but I would really urge you to reinstall the operating system.
I have done it my self but only because my motherboard died and I needed my data, so I plugged it into my new build, retrieved the data and then formatted and reinstalled my operating system.

Is it possible to just reinstall the OS, without touching the other data? (Programs, Registries, ect...)
I think I may have done it before, It has just been a while since I reformatted any of my computers.

Ive done the swap like that, remove all drivers, do a sweep and tear it down and rebuild. Sometimes it works, sometimes you get an error and cant go any further.

I say get a way to back up anything that you just cant loose.

Oh Ive done 939 ASUS to DFI
939 to 775
various chipsets in the intel line from 975X to upgrades.

If done carefully and methodically it can be done. Just a lot of work.

Mine was due to being lazy...but I was successful almost every time until my latest. P35 to X48T3RS...sent my OS for a loop. Had to finally rewrite a 3 year old OS...lol

I plan on upgrading to a new MOBO (So I can upgrade my CPU, and RAM), but don't have one picked out yet.

the problem is that XP has some essential files that are configured to use specific hardware and if u change hardware, u get problems
even in virtual machines that create virtual hardware, if hardware is different and configured differently, u will have problems
