Sapphire X800GTO AGP: R430 or R480 ?

I' ve just bought and installed a new Sapphire X800GTO AGP.

Is there a software way to know for sure which processor I have (R430 or R480) without opening the case again? And for memory (2.0 ns or 1.6ns) ?

The modding to try to unlock the 4 pipelines (12-->16) is possible only for R480 or for R430 too? Is there a way to know in advance (es. fuses read) if it will work or is it just try & pray ? :)

thanx

First step is to install ATITool. Start "find max" core and if the result is 400-450MHz most probably you have R430. If you can reach 450-600MHz most probably you have R480. If you have locked pipes post your fuse results to see whether we can help you ;) .

Good luck

Thanks!! It goes no more than 440Mhz so I guess it's R430.....

I attach my fuses, if I have understood well its meaning, I can unlock 4 pipes, can you confirm??

If the pipes are bad, you can "blind flash" back, which is really easy. You insert the floppy, and restart. Wait for your pc to finish loading from the floppy, and use the same command line, with the original bios' name in place of the new one.

to flash, make a bootable floppy disk, put atiflash on it, your original bios, and the modified one. Make sure both bios names are easy to remember. Eg. original.bin, newbios.bin.

insert the floppy disk, and restart your computer, which should load from the floppy disk into dos. If not, you need to change the boot settings i your bios. Once it's finished loading, use this command:

atiflash -p -f -newbios 0 [biosname].bin

(same command with the other bios name is used to flash back)

Good luck :)

I did as you said and everything seems ok, atitool now tells me 16 pipeline active

But how can I tell if the 4 more pipes are bad or have problems, which are the effects (artifacts or the card doesn't work in some circumstances)?
It seems all ok to me but I'd like to be sure....

thanks a lot

umm, just let atitool find the max core. It will usually be slightly lower than your previous overclock, but if it finds artifacts at stock speeds, that's when you know they're bad.

Good job, nice to hear you got all 16 cylinders firing! :D

Probably your mems are 2.0 Nseg. My sapphire X800 Gto AGP is a R480 and 2.0 Nseg. No posibility to unlock 16 pipes in this case. Your are lucky!!!

Even with 16pp, it will still be slower than a 12pp R480 AGP X800GTO.

Unfortunately.

@infrared:

Thanks! I was looking around for some instructions on how to edit my bios to unlock (or at least try to unlock) the remaining 4 pipes on my new card. I noticed I had the same fuse readings as fiddler did, so I downloaded the bios that you modified for him, followed your instructions, and I now have all 16 pipes working! Many, many thanks!

I did notice, just for reference if anyone happens to have the same card and wants to try this method, that after I unlocked the pipes I could not overclock anywhere past 420mhz core. Whenever ATITool got to 420 my whole system would crash. My ram still successfully goes up to about 540 and I'm getting around 1000 points greater in 3dmark05 (that's 16Pipes@415/540 vs 12Pipes Stock). Interestingly, my scores between running 12Pipes OC'd to max and 16Pipes 'Stock' are roughly the same. I guess this would mean the pipes are functioning :D.

Thanks again,

Psy

Reminds me why I joined these forums, people who really do help rather than just talking about it!! Always a pleasure.

Did you revert to stock clocks before you flashed, failing to do so is a common cause of low overclocks after-flash.

Grodaf I have prepared Automated Flash Utility for cards like your (with R430 and Realto bridge).
I will send it to you tomorrow. You can flash to 16 pipes (meanwhile your card can be unlocked ;) ) or to rollback to 12 pipes, also you can flash a overclocked BIOS (also included) with 440/540MHz. I remake the utility and will reduce the clocks of the OC BIOS to 420/525MHz because 440 should be too much for most R430 :) .

THX!!! :toast:

yes 440mhz for the core will be too much, i tested and maximum found by atitool is 430mhz, higher i had no screen :p

i suceeded to flash my bios with this modified bios:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=5367&page=137 #1366

it worked, i had my 16 pipes.. during 1 hour :ohwell: after i had artifacts on my screen

so i tried to put back my default bios, re-installing dirvers etc, i got back 12pipes but there still these f**k*n artifacts :(

is my card dead??

Decrease the memory and after that core clock until the artifacts disappear (if they). Fine the stable clocks for both with 16 pipes.

dont know what to do, i think my card is endommaged, will give it back to shop and wait.. but my guarantee is now wasted.. :s

Flash the original BIOS with atiflash and command line:
atiflash -newbios -f -p 0 backup.bin (or whatever the name is but with max. 8 symbols). If you still have artifacts just RMA it. You haven't done nothing :) . You can also try with flashing of empty.bin (DO NOT RESTART after) flash the original BIOS.

if card is sent to sapphire, won't they see that I flashed the bios??
in this case they could refuse to change my card.. :/
anyway i knew risks... :ohwell:

If you have just flashed the BIOS (no cooler removeing) you shouldn't worry. Before to return it try to flash it with other utility and finaly return to the original BIOS with preliminary flashed empty.bin (again - DO NOT RESTART after the flashing of empty.bin imediately after that flash with your backup.bin and finaly restart.) . Now you are ready for RMA and 16 pipes next time ;) .

I will send you the automated flash utility. Just follow the instructions in the .pdf file and let me know what will happen.
